The town is featured in Book 6 of Virgil's Aeneid.

Elea, called in Roman times Velia, is an ancient polis of Magna Grecia. The archaeological area is located in the Piana di Velia district, in the municipality of Ascea, in the province of Salerno, within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park Elea, denominata in epoca romana Velia, è un'antica polis della Magna Grecia. L'area archeologica è localizzata in contrada Piana di Velia, nel comune di Ascea, in provincia di Salerno, all'interno del Parco nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano e Alburni
