- ABOUT THE NATURAL PARK MORRO DO OSSO -

Morro do Osso, 143m high, is part of the chain of granite hills existing in Porto Alegre and is located near the shore of Lake Guaíba. It has 220 hectares of natural area and constitutes an important biological center, practically isolated by the urbanization of the neighborhoods Tristeza, Ipanema, Camaquã and Cavalhada, adjacent to the hill. From the top of the hill you have one of the most beautiful views of the municipality, with Lake Guaíba, the Jacuí Delta, the Santa Tereza, Teresópolis, Agudo, Tapera, Abertas and Ponta Grossa hills.

Part of Morro do Osso is the Natural Park of Morro do Osso, with an area of ​​127 hectares.

The struggle for the preservation of the Natural Park of Morro do Osso has more than 20 years. Because of its great biodiversity and remnants of the Atlantic Forest, the hill motivated environmentalists from the municipality, surrounding communities, universities and public agencies to seek conservation through the creation of the Permanent Commission for the Defense of Morro do Osso.

In 1979, the park was transformed into an ecological preservation area by the city's Master Plan. In 1990, the first ecological tour was carried out to preserve the area and make the park effective. In 1994, the Morro do Osso Natural Park was created.

Currently, the park covers an area of ​​57 hectares, already expropriated, with expansion provided by the Master Plan for 127 hectares, which will ensure the protection of the site

Flora
Approximately 60% of the natural vegetation of Morro do Osso consists of forest formations of two types: the high forest and the low forest. The rest is made up of herbaceous-shrub communities, formed by stony fields and capoeiras and brooms. In the high and humid forest, with strong influence of the Atlantic Forest, the fig-purgae (Ficus insipida), the rust cinnamon (Nectandra oppositifolia) and the corticeira-da-serra (Erythrina falcata) stand out.

The low forest usually occupies the tops or the upper slopes of the hill. It is represented by the capororoca (Myrsine umbellata), the wild-winged woodworm (Lithraea brasiliensis), the whiteworm (Sebastiania commersoniana) and the camboim (Myrciaria cuspidata).

Morro do Osso also presents some tree species under threat of extinction, such as black cinnamon (Ocotea catharinensis) and corticeira-da-serra. In addition, there are species with very restricted distribution in Porto Alegre, such as sobraji (Colubrina glandulosa).

Fauna
Survey and studies verified the existence of great diversity of fauna in Morro do Osso. Among the anurans, there are pit frogs (Bufo dorbignyi), plum tree frog (Hyla pulchella), criolla frog (Leptodacylus ocellatus) and chorone frog (Physalaemus gracilis). Among the reptiles are yellow-lipped lizards (Tupinambis merianae), green lizard (Teius oculatus), papa-pinto (Philodryas patagoniensis) snake, true coral (Micrurus altirostris) and painted jararaca (Bothrops neuwiedi).

In addition to these species, about 65% of the avifauna found in Porto Alegre were recorded in Morro do Osso. It is possible to visualize species of open forest, with forest edge and field, being the saber-blacksmith (Turdus subalaris), juruvia (Vireo olivaceus), pula-pula (Basileuterus culicivorus) and woodpecker (Veniliornis spilogaster). In addition, the place houses rare birds, such as the gecko (Accipiter striatus), the short-tailed hawk (Buteo brachyurus) and the tufted hummingbird (Stephanoxis lalandi).

Some mammals, such as small rodents and rare species such as the howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) and the hedgehog (Sphiggurus villosus) have also been identified locally.

- SOBRE O PARQUE NATURAL MORRO DO OSSO -

O Morro do Osso, com 143m de altura, faz parte da cadeia dos morros graníticos existentes em Porto Alegre e localiza-se próximo à margem do Lago Guaíba. Possui 220 hectares de área natural e constitui-se num importante reduto biológico, praticamente isolado pela urbanização dos bairros Tristeza, Ipanema, Camaquã e Cavalhada, adjacentes ao morro. Do alto do morro tem-se uma das vistas mais belas do município, com o Lago Guaíba, o Delta do Jacuí, os morros Santa Tereza, Teresópolis, Agudo, da Tapera, das Abertas e o da Ponta Grossa.

Parte do Morro do Osso constitui-se no Parque Natural do Morro do Osso, com área de 127 hectares.

A luta pela preservação do Parque Natural do Morro do Osso tem mais de 20 anos. Por apresentar uma grande biodiversidade e resquícios de Mata Atlântica, o morro motivou ambientalistas do município, comunidades do entorno, universidades e órgãos públicos a buscar a conservação com a criação da Comissão Permanente em Defesa do Morro do Osso.

Em 1979, o parque foi transformado em área de preservação ecológico pelo Plano Diretor da cidade. Em 1990, foi realizado o primeiro passeio ecológico para preservação da área e efetivação do parque. Em 1994, foi criado o Parque Natural Morro do Osso.

Atualmente, o parque abrange uma área de 57 hectraes, já desapropriados, com ampliação prevista pelo Plano Diretor para 127 hectares, o que irá garantir a proteção do local

Flora

Fauna
Levantamento e estudos constataram a existência de grande diversidade de fauna no Morro do Osso. Entre os anuros, destacam-se sapo de cova (Bufo dorbignyi), perereca do banhado (Hyla pulchella), rã criola (Leptodacylus ocellatus) e rã chorona (Physalaemus gracilis). Entre os répteis encontram-se lagartos de papo amarelo (Tupinambis merianae), lagartixa verde (Teius oculatus), serpente papa-pinto (Philodryas patagoniensis), coral verdadeira (Micrurus altirostris) e jararaca pintada (Bothrops neuwiedi).

Além dessas espécies, no Morro do Osso foram registrados cerca de 65% da avifauna encontrada em Porto Alegre. Pode-se visualizar espécies de mata aberta, de borda de mata e campo, destacando-se o sabiá-ferreiro (Turdus subalaris), juruvia (Vireo olivaceus), pula-pula (Basileuterus culicivorus) e pica-pau (Veniliornis spilogaster). Além disso, o local abriga aves raras, como o gaviãozinho (Accipiter striatus), o gavião-rabo-curto (Buteo brachyurus) e o beija-flor-de-topete (Stephanoxis lalandi).

Alguns mamíferos, como pequenos roedores e espécies raras como o bugio-ruivo (Alouatta guariba clamitans) e o ouriço-cacheiro (Sphiggurus villosus) também foram identificadas no local.
