The 14 colored rainbow mountains in Argentina are a result of erosion due to the build up of different sediments from when this region was underwater 600 million years ago. To get here, I flew as far north that I could (Jujuy Airport) then took a taxi and 3 hour bus to stay the night in the town of Humahuaca. In the morning, I was able to hitch a ride another hour to Hornocal at 4,000+ meters. The last time I was over this elevation was when I got altitude sickness at Everest Base Camp.Learning from my previous experience, I chugged a lot of water the day before and morning of and luckily made it despite feeling initial symptoms of AMS. Although I was visiting in the rainy season, it was well worth the visit and this natural mountain range phenomenon is by far one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen!
