Isle of Lewis: Black House Arnol - St. Moalag's Church

The Black House is a traditional way to build houses - on the Western Isles some of them were in use until the 1960s. They had thick walls, reed roofs without a chimney, so the smoke of the perpetually burning peat fire had to go through the roof - killing off bugs. The life stock used one side of the room, the humans the other. 

The White House is the newer type - shown here as well. 

St. Moluag's was built in the 12th century and dedicated to Moluag, a fellow of Columba in the 6th century.
