Maria Wörth is located on a peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Wörthersee, about 14 km west of Klagenfurt.
Maria Wörth is a municipality with 1545 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016) in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia/Austria.
Around 875 a church was built on the highest point of the island.
The peninsula, which today houses the Gothic pilgrimage church, was an island until 1770.
