The day starts at Fountains Abbey, an extensive ruin founded 1132 and owned now by the National Trust who for some inexplicable reason frown on drones. So it's getting up early and making sure to take of and land off their ground.

Next is Ripon Cathedral, a lesser known jewel of a place in golden light. Of the first building of 672 (!) the tiny crypt survives, the rest was destroyed 969. The next try was destroyed 1069. After that the present church was built in stages. Interestingly the triforium is fit with windows instead of internal arcading.

After that I have to wait for Aldoborough Roman Town to open up so when I saw a sign to a 14th century church I went there and wasn't disappointed: even organ music is provided.

Of the Roman town there are the typical scant remains - the mosaics make it special.

Then it's off to Marmion Tower, the only remains of a manor house - the setting near the river Ure is quite lovely.

Next sight is Jervaulx Abbey of which most remains are of the buildings surrounding the church. Air footage is best used to make sense of it.

Middleham Castle, home of King Richard III, sports substantial remains whereas Richmond Castle sits on a high cliff above the River Swale and kept the large keep and the outer wall but not much else.
