Saving Markleeville
Anyone in California who is familiar with Epic Bike rides has heard of the Death Ride...and most know that the ride starts in the town of Markleeville (actually at a park just outside of Markleeville).
A year ago on July 4 the Tamarak fire started on the Sierra Crest just 7 miles southwest of Markleville. Because of the rugged terrain., lack of accessibility and rock surroundings, the fire was allowed to burn. Twelve days later, on July 16, the winds kicked up pushing the small fire eastward toward Markleeville.
Due to heroic efforts of fire fighters and the community Markleeville was spared... but much of the surround forest was burned.
I put this short video together as a trailer...for what I hope to be a short documentary on the recovery. I'm trying to line up some interviews with the Sheriff and other key people in the community where were instrumental in saving the town.
