Pitareti Monastery

Pitareti Monastery is one of the most important yet lesser-known medieval monuments of Georgia, hidden deep in the forested mountains of Kvemo Kartli. It was built in the late 12th or early 13th century during the height of the Georgian Golden Age. The main church is a classic domed cross-in-square structure, notable for its refined proportions and carefully cut stone. The façades are decorated with elegant stone carvings that reflect the high level of Georgian medieval architecture. For centuries, Pitareti served as a major spiritual center and was associated with the noble Kakhaberidze family. Despite its remote location, the monastery has survived in remarkably good condition. Only fragments of the original frescoes remain, but they still hint at the former splendor of the interior. Surrounded by mountains and dense forest, the monastery feels isolated and timeless. It blends naturally into the landscape, almost becoming part of the rock itself. Today, Pitareti is a place of silence, history, and deep atmosphere, far from mass tourism.
