Guatemala is the largest country in Central America, with a population (estimated at over 17 million as of 2019) close to double that of Honduras, the next largest country in the region.  Guatemala shares a long border with Mexico and has coasts along both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.  Guatemala was the center of the ancient Mayan civilization which also covered much of the nearby Yucatan Peninsula.  Contributor Zaparoli used his drone to create this stunning aerial tour of this fascinating country.

Antigua: In the Guatemalan Highlands

Antigua Guatemala

AshevilleA...

Contributor and pilot AshvilleAerial used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this beautiful aerial tour of Antigua, a beautiful colonial city in the Highlands of Guatemala.  The city was founded in the mid-16th century by the Spanish Conquistadoras, and was actually the third capital city of what became known as the Kingdom of Guatemala.  Devastated by several earthquakes later in the 16th century, Antigua survived and became one of the most important centers of Spanish and Jesuit culture in Central America.

Amongst the most well-preserved relics of the Spanish Colonial Era in Central America is the city of Antigua in the central Guatemalan highlands.  Antigua served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala, a division of the Spanish Empire that covered all of the present day countries of Central America save Panama, plus parts of what is now Southern Mexico.  This drone video captures one of the cultural treasures of this well-preserved town: the Iglesia Merced, a church which was completed in 1767.

Sandergarc...

Contributor Sandergarcia created this beautiful drone video of one of the top natural sites of Guatemala.  It's a volcanic lake called Lake Atitlán, and it's in the Guatemalan Highlands region which sits between the Sierra Madre de Chiapas Mountains and the Petén Basin in this Central American country.  Formed by a volcanic eruption estimated to have occurred about 84,000 years ago, the lake covers 130 square km (50 square mi.), with a maximum depth of about 340 meters or over 1.1k ft.

Alta Verapaz: Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey - Guatemala

nachobover...

Contributor and drone pilot nachobovery created this beautiful aerial video of a natural monument in Guatemala called Semuc Champey.  It's a bridge made of limestone over the Cahabón River, a waterway which runs through the eastern part of this Central American country.  It is situated in the department of Alta Verapaz Department, which covers the central part of Guatemala.  While it's not easily accessible, as you'll see from the video, it's a stunningly beautiful place in the heart of Central America.

Documentary Film of Guatemala

Zaparolli...

Contributor and drone pilot Zaporolli skillfully blended aerial and ground footage from across Guatemala to create this beautiful documentary for the International Cooperation of Spain.  The video shows the beauty of this Central American land and its native people. While the Spanish conquest had a huge (and generally negative) impact on Mayan lands, the indigenous culture held up better here than it did in the Aztec lands to the north or Inca lands to the south, where very little survived the onslaught.

Guatemala is the largest of the seven countries of Central America and in many respects the most fascinating.  It lies in the heart of the lands of the old Mayan Empire of Pre-Columbian times, and it features a mix of natural scenery that includes coastlines on two oceans, fearsome volcanoes, stunning lakes, and lush rainforests.  Take a ride through this spectacular country in this drone video, which includes footage of Lake Atitlán (Central America's deepest lake) and the ancient ruins of Tikal.

Migrant Caravan on the Move

Migrant Caravan and Immigration from Above

Carlos Dua...

Contributor and pilot Carlos Duarte used a drone to create this powerful video of a Central American "migrant caravan".  These caravans are part of a vast movement of people north from Central America into Mexico and thence to the United States.  In this particular video, you'll see these unfortunates making their way out of (or through) Honduras into Guatemala, which has a long border with Mexico.  Exposed to all manner of deprivations, these migrants hope to make their way to the United States.

Active Volcano Fuego and Acatenango in Guatemala Central America

OOO Photog...

Contributor OOO Photography created this stunning drone video of two active volcanoes in the Central American nation of Guatemala.  Volcán de Fuego is the more recently active of the two.  It lies to the west of the historical city of Antigua near the center of the country.  It is almost always active and has erupted frequently.  Acatenango, the second volcano, is joined to Volcán de Fuego in the same masif.  Acatenango's only known eruptions occurred in the 20th century, most recently in 1972.

Amazing Lake Atitlán Guatemala - Vegetarian Hotel Kaalpul

OOO Photog...

AirVuz contributor and pilot OOO Photography created this beautiful drone video of the Kaalpul de Atitlan, an eco-tourist spa on Lake Atitlán in central-western Guatemala.  The lake is situated in the highlands region of this Central American country, in the Department of Sololá.  The lake is something of a natural wonder.  With three volcanoes just to its south, it has the distinction of being the deepest lake in Central America - it's maximum depth is about 320 meters, or over 1.1k ft.

Check out this drone video of a famous Central American volcano, compliments of top contributor msember.  Guatemala's Volcán de Fuego is located about 16 km (around 10 mi.) west of the city of Antigua.  The mountain is in a near-constant state of low-level activity, and is considered to be at risk for catastrophic eruption given the large population of the area.  The video was shot from the perspective of the adjacent Acatanengo volcano, which has a peak elevation of almost 4k meters above sea level (just over 13k ft.).

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua, Guatemala is one of the cultural and historical treasures of Central America.  Located in the interior Highlands region, Antigua was founded in 1543 as the third capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala, as the Spanish Empire's possessions in Central America were known.  It retained that role until the late 18th century, when a series of earthquakes eventually led to the capital being moved to present-day Guatemala City.  Check out this city and its beautiful Baroque churches in this fantastic drone video by shkundas.
