Reynisfjara is one of the most well known of Iceland's famed black sand beaches.  It's located near the town of Vik in the southern part of the island.  The beach and the basalt rock formations just offshore have caught the attention of TV and movie producers: the beach has appeared in HBO's Game of Thrones series and also in the Star Wars movie Rogue One (2016), in the latter case as Planet Eadu.  Check out the famous beach from above, compliments of top contributor and drone pilot Minglam.

DC-3 Plane Wreck

Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck - Iceland

One of the most recognized sights of Iceland is an abandoned crashed airplane wreck.  It's a US Navy DC-3 which ran out of fuel and crashed on Sólheimasandur, a black sand beach on the island's southern coast.  While the plane's crew survived the ordeal, the wreckage was left in place.  It's not the easiest place to reach (or even find) - there are no nearby roads, and even the ruggedest 4WD vehicles can get stuck in the sand.   The best way to see is via a drone video, such as this one by flyingbydaniel.

Iceland's "Arrowhead Mountain"

Known as the Queen of the Dronie, contributor and drone pilot Wrenee brings us this epic shot from a well known canyon in Iceland.  Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon was formed by glaciation; the Fjaðrá River, which runs through its bottom, did not actually create it.  Located in the southeastern part of the island, the canyon has a maximum depth of 100 meters (330 ft.) and is about two km (1.2 mi.) long. Easily accessible from Iceland's Ring Road, the canyon was (famously) used to film a wildly popular music video by Justin Bieber.

Droning Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss, Iceland - Phantom 4 Pro 4K

Top contributor PilotViking used a DJI Phantom 4 Professional drone to create this epic aerial video of Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland's (and the world's) most well known waterfalls.  Due to its unique structure, it's one of the few falls which can be viewed from behind, in a partially enclosed cavern which lies under an overhang.  Situated on the  Seljalands River in the southern part of the country and easily accessible from Reykjavik, Seljalandsfoss has a single drop of 60 meters (197 ft.).

Iceland's East Fjords

Iceland - TOP hiking places in East fjords

If anyone should be the judge of the best hiking places to visit in the world, it could be HikeTheWorld. The Drone Video Awards nominee for the hike/running video “Runaway”, the team headed out to Iceland for their latest adventure. While there they specifically headed to the East fjords, a 75 miles stretch of coastline from Berufjördur to Borgarfjördur Eystri. See the area by drone in this beautiful aerial piece and read more about their trip in this description below.

Iceland Waterfall Compilation

The North Atlantic island nation of Iceland is known more than anything for its waterfalls.  A function of its mountainous interior combined with its prodigious rainfall/snowfall, it's blessed with some of the most spectacular and unusual waterfalls.  In this amazing drone video by boromdole, you'll be treated to aerial views of the following gems: Skógafos, Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrafoss, Svartifoss, Dettifoss, Litlanesfoss , Hengifoss, Dynjandi, Godafoss, Gullfoss, Bæjarfoss and Haifoss.

The Westfjords and Hornstrandir

Although Iceland has become an increasingly popular tourist destination, the majority of its most-visited sites are along its southern and eastern coastlines.  In this magnificent drone video by boromdole, you'll be treated to aerial views of a much less visited corner of the island: the Westfjords, a giant peninsula which extends off of the northwestern part of the island.  The video even includes footage of even more remote Hornstrandir, a sub-peninsula which runs off the northern side of the Westfjords.

Iceland's Waterfalls

Aerial View of Iceland Waterfalls

Iceland's geologically young age and extensive glacier coverage combine to create some of the world's most spectacular waterfalls.  Even as Iceland's tourism traffic has grown in recent years, it's still rare to see more than a few hundred people at any given waterfall.  In this stunning drone video by flyingbydaniel, you'll get an aerial sampler of four of the most famous falls: Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Brúarárfoss and Öxarárfoss, all of which lie in the southern part of the island.

Lyrical Tale from Iceland

Tales of Iceland

Former Drone Video of the Week winner created this extremely creative piece from a trip to the North Atlantic nation of Iceland.  The video follows a beautifully worded narrative from the perspective of an Icelandic "princess" exploring this spectacularly beautiful land.  The video features footage from around the island, including the Westfjords Peninsula on the western side of Iceland, the volcanic craters around Lake Blahylur in a remote area of southern Iceland, and more.

The Westfjords Peninsula

Iceland's Westfjords is a giant and remote peninsula off the island's northwestern coast.  It's cactus-like shape makes for dozens of fjords that take up almost its entire coastline.  Covering an enormous 22k+ square km or around 8.6k square its, its land area is comparable to the UK region of Wales - yet its population is a bit over 7k, roughly 2/3 of whom live in a single town (Ísafjörður).  Check out this desolate but beautiful region from above in this drone video by boromdole.

The Stunning Geology of Iceland

EPIC Iceland Travel Film | Cinematic Full HD | DJI Mavic Pro Drone

Alexander ...

Contributor Alexander Schmidt Photography used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this marvelous and highly cinematic aerial tour of Iceland.  The video captures the intense natural beauty of this island, the product of volcanic activity on the floor of the North Atlantic which first appeared above the water's surface about 18 million years ago - an infant in geological terms.  Enjoy the aerial views of its volcanoes, fjords, geothermal springs - all of which are a function of its unique geology.

Iceland's Southern Region

The Southern Region of Iceland, called Suðurland in Icelandic, has a population of 23,311. The area has a diverse and spectacular natural environment that is easier to access year round than in other parts of Iceland. From geothermal bathing, to glacier experiences, waterfalls, and more the area is a great option for travelers looking to explore.  Best of all, it's all easily accessible within a few hour's drive of Reykjavik, in many cases no more than 60-90 minutes.  See just what it looks like in this 4K winter video by franllano.

The Reykjanes Peninsula

The breath of Iceland, tribute to the sea!

Breath of ...

The western side of Iceland is distinguished by a series of peninsulas which extend toward the neighboring island of Greenland.  In this drone video by Breath of Iceland, you'll get a great aerial view of the southernmost of these peninsulas: Reykjanes.  The base of the peninsula is just south of Reyjavik, and the peninsula itself is home to Keflavik Airport, the principal international air hub for Iceland.  As you'll see in the video, despite creeping signs of "civilization", the peninsula retains a pristine-looking landscape and seascape.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Kirkjufell Mountain, and More

Award-winning contributor Madebyvadim created this rather stunning and highly cinematic aerial tour of Iceland, the North Atlantic island nation.  The video was shot from across the island, and features footage of some of the most iconic Iceland scenes. Highlights include overhead shots of the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Kirkjufell Mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula (on the western side of the island), the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, the Dyrhólaey "rock arch" at the island's southern tip, and more.

Lake Kleifarvatn, Reykjanes Peninsula

The breath of Iceland, Lake Kleifarvatn at winter time!

Breath of ...

Iceland's Lake Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on Reykjanes, the southernmost of the three large peninsulas which extend off the western coast of this North Atlantic island nation.  The lake is unusual in that all water exchange occurs underground and out of site; there are no visible sources or outlets of the lake.  The lake covers about 8 square km (around 3 square mi.) and is quite deep - almost 100 meters or about 320 ft.   Check out the lake from a drone perspective in this video by contributor Breath of Iceland.

The Gunnuhver Geothermal Zone, Reykjanes

The Gates of Hell - Gunnuhver

Iceland's Gunnuhver is one of those geological phenomena which is almost unique to this geologically fascinating island in the North Atlantic.  It's a geothermal area which is located at the tip of Reykjanes, the southernmost of the three peninsulas which extend off of the island's western coast.  It's one of the most accessible of the island's many active geological zones to the capital city of Reykjavik, which lies about 45 minutes to the northeast.  You can check out Gunnuhver from above in this drone video by top contributor snorrithor.

Geldingadalir's Second Eruption

Top AirVuz contributor and pilot snorrithor does it again with this fantastic drone video of a volcanic eruption on the North Atlantic island of Iceland.  Following a series of earthquakes in late 2020 and early 2021, Geldingadalir began erupting on March 21.  The subject of the video is a second eruption, which began on April 5th when a fissure about 1.5 km (roughly a mile) from the original eruption opened up and began spewing hot lava.  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in April, 2021.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The breath of Iceland, Snæfellsnes

Breath of ...

Snæfellsnes is the middle of the three great peninsulas which extend off the western coast of Iceland, south of the Westfjords and north of the Reykjanes Peninsula. While it's not that far from Reykjavik, it's not part of the country's "ring road" and receives far less tourist traffic.  The peninsula extends about 90 km (around 55 mi.) in length, with its wester tip home to the Snæfellsjökull volcano and  national park named after it.  See the magical peninsula from above in this drone video by Breath of Iceland.

Contributor and drone pilot elnaz555 traveled from her native Ontario (Canada) to Iceland to make this amazing drone video of the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in southeastern Iceland.  It's right at the edge of the Vatnajökull National Park, at the head of the  Breiðamerkurjökull glacier.  The lagoon has been the filming locations for many feature movies (including the James Bond filme View to a Kill and Batman Begins) and got some additional minor exposure in HBO's Game of Thrones series.

Reynisfjara, Fjaðrárgljúfur, and More

Iceland is known for its incredible landscape, much of it that can be seen in this aerial film by AirVuz content creator and pilot alexgaflig. He’ll start off with shots of some of the many icebergs that float around the perimeter of the island, then fly over Reynisfjara, the world-famous black-sand beach on the South Coast of of this North Atlantic island. You’ll also see Fjaðrárgljúfur, the famous canyon in south east Iceland and Vatnajökull, the largest and most voluminous ice cap in the country.

Volcanic Craters around Lake Blahylur

Make the World Go Round

Former Drone Video of the Week winner created this spectacular drone video of a little-known area in Iceland. It's an area of volcanic craters around Lake Blahylur.  While the area is in southern Iceland, it's far enough removed from the Ring Road that it's far less visited than other sights of southern Iceland. The stunningly beautiful area is situated just to the southwest of Vatnajökull National Park, about halfway between Reykjavik and the town of Hof in southeastern Iceland.

Icelandic Southern Highlands: Landmannalaugar

Landmannalagur - Highlands of Iceland 4K

Check out this stunning drone video from the highlands of Iceland, compliments of contributor Ericbartolo.  The video was filmed in an area called Landmannalaugar (translated "Rainbow Mountains"), which is an upland area that's part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the southern part of the island.  Known for its geothermal areas and the colors of the lava rock, Landmannalaugar is a popular spot for hiking as well as for Icelandic horseback riding.  Accessing the area generally requires a 4WD vehicle as the roads are unpaved.

Reykjanes Geyser Fields

Iceland Geothermal Fields

Visitors to Iceland wanting to see its geological wonders needn't go far: the giant mud geysers of Gunnuhver are just a few km/miles from the country's principal international airport.   Seen here in this outstanding drone video by Jasonknklean, Iceland's largest geyser field is located near the western tip of Reykjanes, at peninsula which extends west of Reykjavik.  At about the :10 mark, there's a great shot of Reykjanes Lighthouse, which lies in the middle of the field and is Iceland's oldest lighthouse.

Icelandic Landscapes

In this stunningly cinematic video, top content creator and drone pilot Huettehuette is giving us a new, unique view of Iceland from both the ground and from above. With a variety of close up shots of the frozen tundra, hot springs, geysers, wild horses, even shipwrecks, the Northern Lights and waterfalls, the piece gives you an intimate look at the Nordic country. The aerial shots bring us more powerful waterfalls, glaciers, and fjords, pulling the viewer in to the piece and highlighting the country's intrigue.

Iceland: Off the Beaten Path

ICELAND - Land of Fire & ICE See the best hidden spots of Iceland

As Iceland's popularity with international tourists has exploded in recent years, it's easy to forget that most of this North Atlantic island nation is still off the beaten path.  Most of Iceland's tourist traffic is concentrated in the spots along the southern part of the island, and virtually all of it is limited to places which are immediately accessible from its main ring road.  In this drone video by chris_and_photograph, you'll be treated to some amazing footage of the "other Iceland", a land which awaits discovery.

Westfjords' Hornstrandir and More

Wild Iceland | Highlands & Westfjords

Eaglewood ...

Top contributor Eaglewood Pictures does it again with this stunning piece from Iceland.  The video was shot in some of the more remote spots on this North Atlantic island, well away from the increasingly familiar scenes along the coastal ring road.  Much of the footage is from the Westfjords, the oddly shaped peninsula which juts off the island's northwestern coast and which itself consists of many sub-peninsulas.   Some of the most amazing footage is around Hornstrandir, the northernmost of the Westfjords peninsulas.

The River Deltas of Southern Iceland

Iceland Glacial River Deltas

AirVuz contributor snorrithor was a Winner at the second annual Drone Video Awards in the Game of Thrones category, taking home the prize for a video shot within one of Iceland's ice caves.  The subject of this stunning piece is another one of Iceland's natural wonders: the glacial deltas along the southern coast of this Scandinavian island nation.  Fed by the giant glaciers which cover most of southern Iceland, the rivers which empty into the North Atlantic Ocean create colorful patterns, the beauty of which is best appreciated from above.

Iceland Wintertime Views

Iceland in 4K | Northern Lights

The vast majority of Iceland's visitors arrive in the summer, when daylight can extend to nearly midnight.  Very few visit the island during the winter months, when the sun barely peaks above the horizon for a few hours.  Iceland winters are not without their charms though, as you'll see in this excellent piece by top contributor hamzamuj.  Shot with a DJI Mavic Pro 2 and supplemented with ground footage, the video features views of the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the capital city Reyjkavik, and the Northern Lights.

Iceland's Freshwater Treasure

I am Water

Home to some of the world's largest icecaps and glaciers, and graced with massive waterfalls, Iceland reminds the world of fresh water's importance to life on Planet Earth.  That's the message that top contributor Paul Vlad wants to bring through in this excellent drone video from the North Atlantic island nation.  You'll be taken over scenes of massive water movement in the form of falls, streams, and rivers, all parts of a giant system which is in danger of being thrown out of balance by human activity.

Þakgil, Fjaðrárgljúfur, and Stuðlagil Canyons

Iceland - 3 Canyons

Pavlo Glaz...

AirVuz contributor and pilot Pavlo Glazkov created this beautiful drone video of three canyons on the North Atlantic island of Iceland.  The first is called Þakgil; it is situated near the coastal town of Vik, close to Iceland's southernmost point.   The second featured canyon is Fjaðrárgljúfur.  Located near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur a bit to the northeast of Vik, it's probably the country's best-known canyon.  The third spot is Stuðlagil, a canyon located in east-central Iceland which is far less accessible.

Valahnúkamöl: Tip of Reykjanes

ICELAND Valahnúkamöl by Drone

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor and pilot brings us this stunning drone video from a giant rock formation in Iceland called Valahnúkamöl.  It's a ridge at the tip of Reykjanes, the southernmost of the peninsulas which extend off the western coastline of this North Atlantic island nation.  Created by the powerful waves and winds here, Valahnúkamöl consists of a 420 meter long (about 1.4k ft.) rock ridge.  It's about an hour's drive west of Reykjavik.

Gulfoss, Jökulsárlón, and More

Iceland remake in 4K

Take in these marvelous drone views of Iceland, compliments of former Drone Video of the Week winner dronesantana007.  The video opens with a great shot of a river canyon somewhere in the Highlands  At about the :50 mark, you'll see the famous Gulfoss Waterfall, followed by the equally famous Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.  Other featured spots include the fabled Blue Lagoon in the southern part of the country, the distinctive Hallgrímskirkja Church in the capital city of Reykjavik, and more.

The Icelandic Highlands by Drone

Iceland - the greatness within | Highlands

Jurgis Kre...

Most travelers to Iceland confine themselves to spots along the Ring Road, a national highway which runs mostly along the coastline of the island's coastline.  While many of the country's most spectacular sights do lie close to the coasts, many do not.  In particular, the vast Highlands area, which covers much of the interior of the island, is not experienced by many Iceland travelers.  Take in these stunning aerial views of the Highlands in this fantastic piece by top contributor Jurgis Kreilis / FilmDay.

Hornafjörður: Fjord of Southeastern Iceland

Hornafjordur 2020 Drone Reel

Check out these excellent drone views from southeastern Iceland, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot _mishamartin.  The video was filmed in the vicinity of the town of Hornafjörður, which lies on a fjord of the same name, just north of the more well-known town of Höfn.  You'll be treated to some excellent aerial views of the area's black sand beaches, as well as the glass-smooth and iceberg-dotted  waters of the fjord itself.  Much of the area is covered by the Vatnajökull, the largest and most voluminous of Iceland's icecaps.

Voyage Through Iceland

Icelandic Voyage

Jay Christ...

Pilot Fit Lam Studios recently had the opportunity to shoot a short film in Iceland. Although this isn’t that piece, this four-minute film is remarkable in its own right. The first minute alone features notable locations like Reynisfjara, the world-famous black-sand beach on Iceland’s south coast, Viking’s Sword Road, shots of wild horses running across the terrain, plenty of rotating shots over gushing waterfalls, even a couple of cameos by one of our favorite Norwegian pilots (hello, PilotViking!).

90 Seconds of Iceland Highlights

Awesome Iceland

Take in some stunning aerial views of Iceland in this fast-paced 90 second piece by former Drone Video of the Week Finalist AndriThor.  The video begins with some incredible shots of some iconic Iceland waterfalls before heading to the lava fields of the Highlands of the southern interior.   From there, you'll be taken over the island's spectacular Atlantic coastline, through its gaping canyons, past its distinctive-looking mountains and more rushing waterfalls, and over its steaming geothermal sites.
