Hong Kong enjoys a special status within the People's Republic of China, to whose control the city was transferred in 1997.  Since March of 2019, Hong Kong has seen a series of protests aimed at a new law that facilitates extradition to the mainland.  In this remarkable drone video by top contributor Droneland, you'll get a bird's eye view of one of these large gathering as it was disbursed by security forces. This video won the Narrative/Documentary category at the 6th Annual New York City Drone Film Festival.

Contributor Nazil Moktari created this powerful drone video showing a large protest taking place in mid-March, 2019, in the streets of the Algerian capital city Algiers.  The protesters were demanding the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the octogenarian who has served as president of this important North African country since 1999.  In February of 2019, Bouteflika announced his intention to run for a fifth term.  Within weeks, facing widespread opposition, he dropped his bid.

Top AirVuz contributor and pilot jayxlamar posted this remarkable drone video from a large protest against police brutality in Los Angeles, California.  The action was one of thousands held around the world following the killing of an unarmed Black man named George Floyd by four police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Memorial Day of 2020.  The killing touched an especially raw nerve in America's second-largest city, which has a long history of dealing with the consequences of racially-motived police brutality.

In this video, a drone pilot managed to capture the Great March of Return, a six month series of protests in Gaza, a strife-torn corner of the Middle East.  Captured by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967, Gaza was granted partial autonomy in 1994 under the Oslo Accords.  Since a takeover of the Gaza government by Hamas in 2007, it's been the scene of much strife as Israel sealed off the territory in response. This video is a nominee in the 2nd Annual Drone Video Awards' Drones for Good category.

Top contributor Droneland used a drone to create an aerial portrait of Hong Kong as it undergoes some of its most serious political unrest in recent memory.  The protests stem from popular dissatisfaction with perceived impingement of rights granted to the former British colony under the 1997 agreement by which control shifted from the UK to China.  The video captures aerial footage of the protests that erupted on the July 1, 2019 anniversary of the handover, and goes on to show other sights around the city.

Soon after his inauguration in January of 2017, President Donald Trump issued an executive order which was aimed at restricting immigration from about a half-dozen predominantly Muslim countries.  The action, which was consistent with the anti-immigration views expressed during his election campaign, triggered widespread protest across the country.  In this excellent drone video, AirVuz contributor B. Dumas filmed a protest at the southern tip of Manhattan in New York City, where demonstrators arranged themselves to spell out "#noban".

Top contributor Bumble Bee Productions brings us this outstanding drone video of a peaceful protest in New Orleans, Louisiana in early June of 2000.  The protest was one of hundreds around the world prompted by outrage caused by the death of a Black man named George Floyd at the hands of four police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Memorial Day.  Despite concerns that this particular protest could turn violent and possibly result in the destruction of the Andrew Jackson statue in Jackson Square, it was entirely peaceful.
