A New Perspective (Audi Nines 2018) - Johnny FPV

Action sports and first person view (FPV) drones is one of the best combinations that this industry has to offer! In this edit by top drone racer and FPV freestyle pilot JohnnyFPV, watch as he follows some of the world's best freestyle skiers at the Audi Nines competition at the Sölden ski resort in Tyrol, Austria.  This amazing FPV film was nominated for the AirVuz Drone Video of the Week Contest in the Spring of 2018 and was our Winner in the Extreme Sports category for the 2nd Annual Drone Video Awards.

FPV with GoPro 360 in the Alps

Skier + FPV Drone + 360° GoPro = EPICNESS

For his third upload to AirVuz, contributor moritzjkr brings us this magnificent drone video from the ski slopes of the Alps Mountains.  The video was shot with a 360 degree GoPro mountained to a first person view (FPV) racing quad, combined with footage taken from a camera mounted to the skier himself.  It's some of the best FPV skiing footage we've seen yet, demonstrating the power of FPV drone (when flown by highly skilled pilots) to capture some of the world's fastest-moving action sports scenes.

Chasing a World Cup Champion

Red Bull : Follow Me x Alexis Pinturault

Tomz FPV...

Check out this incredible flight by Team AirVuz pilot Tomz FPV, in which he chases Alexis Pinturault, the most successful French skier in World Cup history. As both an alpine ski racer and Olympic medalist, Pinturault offers some fun FPV pursuit around the gates while the racing drone tracks all of the arcing through the fresh powder.  With all of the high energy footage, it's no surprise this video was a collaboration with Supersize Films for Red Bull, and why Tomz was named to the FPV Pilots to Watch list in January, 2020.

Winter FPV Action Reel

Winter FPV showreel

Hit the winter slopes through the eyes of a very experienced first person view (FPV) drone pilot in this incredible action reel by AirVuz contributor kalash.fpv.  With footage from Russia's Caucasus Mountains as well as its Kamchatka Peninsula, the highly cinematic reel features epic shots of some very talented (and brave) heli-skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobile riders hitting the snow-covered slopes.  It's a reminder of how FPV drones are changing the way we can appreciate high-speed action sports.

We don't even know what to call the extreme sport depicted in this first person view (FPV) video by AirVuz contributor and FPV pilot TomzFPV.  Maybe kite-skiing?  It just looks dangerous and wickedly fun, and the only way to film it is the way he did - with an FPV racing drone.   Watch him chase this very brave skier down a mountain, as his subject alternates between "regular" back-country skiing and literally flying down the slope.  We had a hard time deciding whether to be impressed more by skills of the skier or the quad pilot!

Chasing a Half-Pipe Skier

Sessions / Alex Ferreira + FPV Drone

Pilot Flylifeco is back in his element, the mountains of Colorado, to fly alongside a professional skier in this extreme-sports-by-FPV video. He’s tracking half-pipe skier Alex Ferreira, who won the gold medal in Men’s Ski Superpipe at the 2019 Winter X Games. The 25-year-old looks solid from the eye’s of Flylifeco’s mini quad, capturing a variety of tricks from above, alongside, and behind the athlete. This video earned Flylifeco a spot on our AirVuz FPV Pilots to Watch list in December of 2019.

Wow, what a way to watch some extreme, backcountry snowboarding! AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) pilot vasiliz takes us out to the supremely fresh powder of the backcountry mountain tops at Spain's Baqueira Beret resort in the Pyrenees. Oftentimes, professional snowboarders will be brought in via helicopter since these locations are only accessible by air. To film this level of snowboarding was formerly only accessible for companies with the funds to do so.  This video made the FPV Pilots to Watch list in September, 2019.

FPV Chasing in the Alps

Alpination - SKI FREERIDE & FPV -

As first person view (FPV) pilots continue to hone their skills and FPV technology continues to improve, FPV video content is proliferating in several directions.  In contrast to early freestyling videos, which were all about showing technical flying skills, we're seeing FPV pilots focusing on making more cinematic shots of beautiful landscapes, as well as increasing skills with respect to filming moving "targets".  This video by J-TRUE FPV illustrates both FPV styles, earning him a spot on the FPV Pilots to Watch list in May, 2020.

Red-FPV Ski Chasing

The open of this jaw-dropping first person view (FPV) drone video by legendary French FPV pilot Red—fpv will make you feel like you’re the one flying down the hill on skis.  The award-winning content creator does a magnificent job running the mountainside just like the extreme, freestyle skiers he follows later in the piece. There’s tricks, crashes, behind-the-scenes, tree proximity, and more all jam packed into this impressive FPV freestyle ski film by one of the world's top FPV content creators.

Skiing in Kazakhstan

Girl in a Red Dress on Skis

Prepare to be amazed by this stunning first person view (FPV) drone video from contributor and FPV pilot EPIFANOVKZ.  He filmed a woman in a bright, billowing red dress skiing down a mountain in the Almaty Mountains of Kazakhstan in Central Asia.  The mountains lie to the south of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city and erstwhile capital, along the border with fellow Central Asian republic Kyrgyzstan.  They are part of the Tian Shan range, home to some of the world's tallest peaks. This video was picked for the FPV PIlots to Watch list.

When is it just to cold for first person view (FPV) drone flying?  Apparently, pretty cold.  AirVuz contributor and FPV pilot 187 video managed to film a snowmobiler on a bone-chillingly cold morning in the mountains of Russian Siberia.  The mercury was minus 13 degrees Farenheit or about minus 25 degrees celsius.  The specific location of the video was in the area known as Mount Shoria , east of the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia.  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in February of 2022.

FPV Chasing Sam Favret at Chamonix

FLOW - with Sam Favret

Prepare to be amazed by this spectacular first person view (FPV) drone video following a famous skier hitting the slopes of the legendary resort of Chamonix in the French Alps.  Watch maximemoulinfilm follow skier Sam Favret, who has become known around the world for being filmed tackling some of the world's most challenging back-country slopes.  Filmed during a period when Chamonix was otherwise closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the video combines FPV footage with shots from a DJI Mavic Pro 2. This video was a DVOY finalist in 2021.

Petranboard Event in Turkey

Red Bull Petranboard

In this excellent first person view (FPV) drone video by AirVuz contributor and FPV pilot Shamkhal_fpv, you'll see an unusual winter activity - a petranboard race sponsored by Red Bull in northeastern Turkey.  Petranboards, also called Lazboards, are essentially the ancestors of the modern snowboard.  Made of wood, they emerged on the Petran Plateau in the mountains of Rize, a province which is set in the Pontic Mountains that run roughly parallel to the Black Sea coastline.  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list.

Really good long-range flying is not as easy as these guys make it look and we're not just talking on the sticks. Oftentimes there are mile-long hikes through the elements involved in order to get the best, most cinematic shots. Hikes like the one JZFPV says he took to create this piece. He says "Utah never disappoints," we say neither does JZFPV. Speed, flow, accuracy, and perfect shot-framing make this flight and edit one for the books. This was an FPV Pilot to Watch video in January of 2019.

FPV Filming a French Hockey Club

Hockey vs. FPV drone - EHC WILDCATS French Hockey club

Due to its high speed compared to other team sports, ice hockey is well-suited to being filmed by first person view (FPV) drones flown by experienced and with proper safety precautions.  In this first upload to AirVuz by brand-new contributor BlackMountainProd, you'll see French hockey club players being chased around an indoor ice arena by an FPV quad; note how many of these shots would be impossible to capture by conventional means.  This video was picked by the AirVuz editorial staff for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in June, 2023.

Halfpipes with a French Olympian

Snowboard Superpipe Spring Session

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot FrankyMoiss used a first person view (FPV) drone to track one of the world's top snowboarders working a  halfpipe course in the French Alps.  Liam Tourki, aged 23 (as of the Spring of 2022) competed on the French halfpipe team at the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing, China.  Prior to that, he finished in the top 20 in the halfpipe World Championships in both 2019 and 2021.  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in Apil of 2022.

Chasing Freeriders in Kremnica, Slovakia

BiGAiR Kremnica 2020

The towncenter of Kremnica, Slovakia transformed into a big action arena ready for the likes of some pretty trick snowboarders and freestyle skiers.  This popular event in early February 2020 was the perfect space for AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot snail.fpv to capture some epic shots. Watch as he mixes cruises down the ski jump with the athletes and shows off his maneuverability and control, giving us plenty of reason to name him as an FPV Pilots to Watch in February 2020.

Snowboard Chasing at Roza Khotur

Sun, Snow, Fly, Satisfaction

Although this killer FPV video represents some of drone pilot Krikzster's first experiences flying FPV freestyle in the mountains, you'd think he's been doing this kind of flying there for years.  Watch as he tracks these crazy good snowboarders down the slopes of resort Roza Khotur (home to several events of 2014 Winter Olympics) outside of Sochi, Russia. While a bluebird sky serves as a backdrop for his dynamic flying, he paired the footage with some complementary intense tunes, creating a film that is quintessentially 'action sports fpv.'

One-Shot Ski Scene at Big Sky

Big Sky Terrain Park - Top to Bottom FPV

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) pilot PattyFPV kills it with this awesome one-shot video chasing a very talented skier down a run at the fabled Big Sky ski resort in Montana.  Watch how he expertly tracks the skiers hitting jumps, spinning, and performing all manner of tricks, never once losing him in the frame.  Watching it, we're sure that the piloting skill is at least as impressive as that of his target.  We gave this video the nod for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in April, 2021.

Ski Chasing in Utah's Wasatch Mountains

Mount Superior South Face Descent - Alex Finke - FPV Shots

Top content contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot coolguy.fpv brings us this epic ski-chasing video from the Rocky Mountains in Utah, USA.  The video was filmed at sunrise on a trip down the south face of Mount Superior, an 11k ft. peak (just under 3.4k m) in the Wasatch Mountains sub-chain near Salt Lake City.  The South Face descent is listed in the 2010 book, Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America.  The video was filmed at sunrise, and the footage was stabilized using the ReelSteady post-production software package.

Chasing Ice Yachts

Ice yachts - essentially racing sailboats on skids - are capable of achieving speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour (about 100 km/hr).  That's too fast for gimbal-stabilized drones like the DJI Mavic series.  It's not too fast for a first person views (FPV) drone, however, as you'll see in this excellent video by top AirVuz contributor loganlien.  In this video, you'll follow along as this talented FPV pilot captures the excitement of this very fast-moving sport.  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in January of 2023.

Freeriding in the Austrian Alps

Flow Of Freeride

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot AdventureGraph put together this stunning video of some freeride (backcountry) skiers making their way down the slopes of the Austrian Alps.  Given the speeds involved, filming these skiers with an FPV drone is extremely challenging, and the closeups he's able to capture are incredible.  Check out the flip shot at the 1:20 mark.  This video was picked by the AirVuz editorial staff for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in December of 2023.

Top pilot Vasiliz created this insanely good submission to be a drone pilot at the Audi Nines event in Austria, and we're quite happy to see it here on AirVuz too! The video will show you how dynamic FPV videos (essentially, chasing a "moving target") can also be highly cinematic.  Chasing skiiers and snowboarders performing stunning tricks with a racing drone is not easy, and generating footage as cinematic as you'll see here even less so.  It made for an easy decision to put this one on the AirVuz FPV Pilots to Watch list in March, 2020.

Talented first person view (FPV) pilot and AirVuz contributor Jussuf Lieberherr brings us this short but action-packed FPV skiing video from the legendary Kaunertal Glacier ski resort in the Austrian Alps.  The resort is situated in the Tyrolean Oberland region of Tyrol, the main state of western Austria.  The video features some epic close-up shots of a very skilled skier tackling some fresh powder in one of Europe's top back-country skiing regions.  This video made the FPV Pilots to Watch list in May of 2021.

Kite and Wing Skating in Italy

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot b1z1o_fpv brings us this outstanding FPV video of two skaters being propelled by the wind across a frozen lake in northern Italy.  Two of the skaters are pulled along by kites, while a third uses a wing-type device.  The video was filmed at the Lago della Serraia in Trentino, one of the provinces of the Trentino-Alto-Adigio region.  This video was picked by the AirVuz editorial staff for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in March of 2023.

Winter Fun in Russia' Far East

Kamchatka heli-skiing | Cinematic FPV

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) pilot kalash.fpv used an FPV mini-quad to make a memorable video record of a heli-skiing trip on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.  Located in Russia's Far East region, the giant peninsula is covered with volcanoes.  Filmed in April of 2021, the video captures both the epic skiing as well as the beautiful scenery.  You'll see how the mountains here descend right to the sea, and the video will take you for a ride along the magnificent nearby coastline.

Chasing Snow Kiter in the Alps

SnowKite X FPV

Snow kiting is a next-level winter action sport, which combines some of the most exciting (and dangerous) elements of skiing and kiteboarding.   Incredibly difficult to master, it's also notoriously difficult to film with a first person view (FPV) drone, which must keep up with a very fast-moving subject in an environment with natural obstacles aplenty.  Bear this in mind as you watch this video by top AirVuz contributor b1z10_fpv, who uses a GoPro Hero 11 mounted atop a 7 inch FPV quad to chase a snow kiter in the Alps.

Montana State University Hockey by FPV

MSU Hockey From a New Perspective

Creator Ohverhead Media earned a spot on the FPV Pilots to Watch list - as well as a 2023 FPV Drone Video of the Year nomination - with this video of a college hockey game. The video was filmed for the Montana State University Bobcats (a club team) during a match with rival Universiy of Montana just after a goal by the former tied up the game with a few seconds left. The video was filmed with a GoPro Hero 12 camera mounted to a "cinewhoop" style FPV quad, whose light weight and ducted fan permit experienced pilots to fly safely around people.

Racing Down the Slopes

The only thing better than skiing or snowboarding in the mountains is watching it via a first person view (FPV) drone. Most of us can't even fathom trying some of the jumps these extreme athletes are landing, but the best way to appreciate their skills is through the lens of a camera mounted to an FPV racing quad.  In this excellent piece, AirVuz contributor and FPV drone pilot gets up close and personal while filming some of his friends as they get major air on a perfect, fresh winter day.

High-Speed Ice Skating

Ice Riders FPV

First person view (FPV) drones are ideal for chasing fast-moving subjects, allowing us to experience adrenaline-filled action sports from an entirely new perspective.  In this outstanding piece by FPV pilot b1z1o_fpv, you'll be able to virtually tag along with two very skilled iceskaters, one being pulled along by a kite and a second skater being propelled by a kite (similar to kitesurfing but at a faster speed).  This video was picked for the FPV Pilots to Watch list in early February of 2022.

FPV Chasing Snowkiters

Snowkiting (or kite skiing) is the outdoor sport where snowboarders and skiers use a kite that harnesses the power of the wind to blast them across the snow.  The winer sport is similar to the water sport, kite-boarding and in its early days athletes used foil kites to propel them. Nowadays, many choose inflatable kites like the ones you see in this drone video by FPV pilot YF LIne. Flying through the sun drenched mountains, you can see why FPV pilot and snowkiter alike have fallen in love with the sport.
