Almost everything we do online depends on submarine cables hidden beneath the ocean.

But when one of those cables fails, a remarkable ship quietly sets out to repair it.

This is the story of DURABLE—the hidden ship behind your internet.

DURABLE is a specialized cable ship designed to work with the submarine cables that form the physical backbone of global communications.

Most of these cables remain invisible to us, thousands of kilometers stretching across the ocean floor. But when a cable is damaged, repairing it requires a remarkable operation at sea.

Using authentic drone footage, this documentary follows the engineering behind a submarine cable repair mission—from locating the fault on the seabed to recovering the damaged cable, cutting and lifting the cable ends, replacing the failed section, splicing the optical fibers inside a protected joint, and carefully returning the repaired cable to the ocean floor.

Some parts of this operation take place deep beneath the surface or involve engineering processes that cannot be filmed directly. A small number of illustrative visualizations are therefore included to help explain the submarine cable repair process. These sequences are intended solely for educational purposes and may not represent the exact equipment, procedures, or internal layout used aboard DURABLE.

Most people will never witness an operation like this.

Yet the infrastructure these ships maintain quietly carries the communications that connect people and businesses around the world.

For many years, I have filmed commercial ships from the air, focusing on their beauty and scale. With my THE STORY BEHIND series, I wanted to go beyond cinematic aerial footage and reveal the engineering, purpose, and hidden stories behind these remarkable vessels.

DURABLE is a perfect example: a ship most people may never notice, performing work most people will never see, on infrastructure almost everyone depends upon.
