For more than a century, shipbuilders focused on one fundamental question: how can a ship move more efficiently through the water?

But the container ship NAGARA represents a different way of thinking.

Instead of looking only beneath the waterline, its designers also considered something every ship must push through above it—the wind.

NAGARA features an unusual bow design known as SSS-BOW (Semi-Spherical-Shaped Bow), developed by Kyokuyo Shipyard. Its distinctive rounded shape makes the front of the ship look almost like a giant windshield.

The idea is fascinating: rather than allowing the ship’s conventional superstructure to meet the wind directly, the bow is shaped to help guide airflow around the vessel and reduce aerodynamic resistance.

From the air, this unusual design becomes especially striking. What initially looks like a curious visual feature reveals a much deeper story about naval architecture, efficiency, and the continuing evolution of commercial ship design.

I originally filmed NAGARA from the air with a DJI Mavic 2 Pro. With my THE STORY BEHIND series, I wanted to return to this footage and go beyond simply showing the ship—to explore why this remarkable bow exists and the engineering idea behind its shape.
