One Minute Journey Through Amazing Locations in Iceland


For a 60 second mini-tour of southern part of Iceland, it's hard to beat this piece by top contributor Siggizoom.  It includes footage of the Dyrhólaey rock arch and an amazing shot of a clifftop lighthouse.  The highlight is a fly-through of a bizarrely symmetrical hole in an iceberg floating in one of the country's ice cube lagoons; you'll see this starting at about the :25 mark.  The video ends with an epic shot over another drone with both aircraft hovering over one of Iceland's many waterfalls. This video was a DVOW nominee in June, 2019.

The Ice Cave - Drone Flying Inside an Ice Cave in Iceland


Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Iceland and one of the largest in Europe.  Within its massive area of 8.1k square km (3k square mi) lie many caves resulting from the icecap's melting patterns.  Contributor Snorrithor flew his DJI Phantom 3 drone into one of these caves, creating a one of a kind "aerial" of this gigantic cavern.  The glacier is the land "Beyond the Wall" in Westeros in HBO's Game of Thrones; the video was a Winner for the Game of Drones category in the AirVuz Drone Video Awards.

Iceland's largest city and capital is Reykjavik, which lies in the southwestern part of the island.  It is a new city by European standards, founded in 1786.  The city is full of Scandinavian charm, and is also known as as a starting point for drives around Iceland's Ring Road, the national highway which is the main route to access most of Iceland's top sights.  Contributor BreathofIceland, one of Iceland's top drone pilots, used a DJI Mavic Air drone to create this amazing aerial tour of Iceland's capital city.

Then, in 2015, it was seen by millions of Star Wars fans by appearing in the 2015 series installment, The Force Awakens.

ClearSky created this epic drone video of southern Iceland in the dead of winter.  The video features footage of some of the most popular sights of southern Iceland, including the mighty Skogafoss Waterfall and the Jökulsárlón glacial lake.  The highlight may be the footage of the distinctive looking Kirkjufell Mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland; this mountain appears as "Arrowhead Mountain" in Seasons 6-7 of HBO's Game of Thrones.

While shooting this promotional video for Katlatrack Advenutre Tours, drone pilot and cinematographer Fujiabra Films had to buy the only controller sold in Iceland when his Mavic 2 controller was destroyed by the elements. The trip also broke his Inspire 2 X7 camera, but the beauty of the landscape made everything totally worth it - at least that's what we think! It is one intense and impressive landscape seen from above and from within the walls of the ice caves in this aerial video.

Who knew that seal watching was such a popular phenomenon in Iceland? You can see why in this drone video by aquinox media of some of those seals sunbathing and playing in Súðavík. The fishing village on the west coast of the Westfjords, Iceland is home to just over 200 people. The main industries in the municipality are fishing, fish processing, and tourism. With all that fish it’s probably not a bad place to be a seal.

Krafla: Surreal Icelandic Landscape


Among the wonders of northern Iceland is the Krafla Lava Field.  Situated just a few km/mi from Lake Mývatn, it's an active caldera where local eruptions occur frequently.  The heat energy from the area powers one of the larger geothermal plants.  The distinct "other-worldliness" of the place led it to be picked a a filming location for the 2015 installment of the Star Wars series, The Force Awakens; scenes of Planet Eadu were filmed here. Check out Krafla from above in this drone video by Benedikt.

The title pretty much say it all. We’ll have to agree with nurkfpv that this Icelandic canyon has to be the best freestyle spot many an FPV pilot could find to rip through. The scene is so stunning, we have to imagine it was hard for the AirVuz FPV Pilot focus on what he was doing. The intense, mossy green foliage latches onto the rocks that surround the gushing falls, every color brighter through the lens of this 4K video. What a session; we're jealous we couldn't witness it in person.

Hvítserkur, or “the Troll” as it is known by locals, is a 15-meter high basalt stack on the shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula in northwest Iceland. It’s a massive, sea-stack with a very unique shape that makes it a hot spot for tourists looking to capture that perfect photo. The rock has been said to resemble a dragon drinking water. You know drone pilots Fujiabra Films had to take a dronie at the infamous rock while in Iceland. See how it turned out in this quick video!

Jökulsárlón: Iceland's Glacial Lagoon


Contributor Luafilmmaker created an epic bird's eye view of Jökulsárlón, a glacial lake in eastern Iceland.  It sits at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, itself part of the Vatnajökull icecap.  Jökulsárlón will be recognizable to James Bond fans; it has appeared in two movies in the series.  It appeared first in the 1985 installment View to a Kill (#16 in the series), starring Roger Moore as 007.  In 2002, it appeared again in Die Another Day, the 22nd in the series and the last to star Piece Brosnan.

Reynisfjara is one of the most well known of Iceland's famed black sand beaches beaches.  It's locate near the town of Vik in the southern part of the island.  The beach and the basalt rock formations just offshore have caught the attention of TV and movie producers: the beach has appeared in HBO's Game of Thrones series and also in the Star Wars movie Rogue One (2016), in the latter case as Planet Eadu.  Check out the famous beach from above, compliments of contributor and drone pilot Minglam.
