Cotter Dam: Water for Canberra

Amazing View of the Cotter Dam

Matteo Pic...

Australia's Cotter Dam was vital to the construction of its capital city Canberra.  The dam was built not for electricity generation but to serve as a critical source of freshwater needed to make Canberra, a compromise choice, the permanent capital of Australia when it became an independent country in the early 1900's (after an interim period when Melbourne was the capital).  Matteo Pictures used a drone to create this spectacular aerial view of this gravity dam in southeastern Australia.

Sharks on the Central Coast

Shark Week

Check out this rather amazing drone video of some sharks stuffing themselves with fish just off the coast of eastern Australia, compliments of contributor Jasonkmclean.  The area where this took place is called the Central Coast, an area of the state of New South Wales a bit north of Sydney.  Australia is definitely a shark country; although extremely rare, Australia has been the scene of the highest number of confirmed unprovoked shark attacks on a per capita basis of any country over the past 50 years.

Scattering Fish on the NSW Coast

Fluid Movement

See a magical moment in New South Wales, Australia in this amazing drone video by top AirVuz contributorand pilot Jasonkmclean. The most populous state of the land Down Under is home to many national parks and coastal cities like Sydney and Newcastle.  Despite its millions of inhabitants though, along the vast shoreline you’ll occasionally come across a scene like the one you’ll see here: a seal, presumably  fishing for its dinner amongst a giant pod of fish, manages to scatter them in a way which is absolutely mesmerizing to watch.

Macquarie: Australia's Oldest Lighthouse

The Macquarie Lighthouse in New South Wales

Contributor and pilot Skys_Feed used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to create this beautiful video of the Macquarie Lighthouse, the oldest in Australia.  It is situated in Vaucluse, a suburb of Sydney in the state of New South Wales.  The lighthouse is situated in an area critical to shipping navigation in and out of the Sydney Harbor.  The present lighthouse was built in 1881-83.  The lighthouse is still operational, and the site is now protected by designation under the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

Beaches on NSW's Southern Coastline

Five of Best Beaches in South Coast New South Wales You've (Probably) Never Been To

The coastline of Australia's state of New South Wales is enormous - it's over 2.1k km (a bit over 1.3k mi.) from the border with Queensland to the north to the southern border with Victoria.  Virtually all of the major coastal towns and cities lie in Sydney and points north.  That leaves many hundreds of km/mi of coastline with few population centers of any size.  In this drone video from Andyhutchinson, you will get a bird's eye view of some of the beautiful but virtually unknown spots along the southern NSW coastline.

Solar Electricity in NSW

Solar in the Outback

To get an idea of how much Australia's terrain changes when you move inland from the coasts, check out this drone video from contributor ZonieLand.   It was shot in the area around Canberra, the national capital which is situated some ways inland (west) of the coast of New South Wales, more or less southwest from Sydney. This is very much Outback country, which really refers to the Australian interior in general as opposed to any specific place.  If you need any proof of this, check out the kangaroos!
