St. Petersburg - The City of White Nights

Prepare to be amazed by Timelab.pro's stunning drone video of St. Petersburg, the former Russian capital city on the Gulf of Finland.  Now the country's second largest city, it is also its most European, fulfilling the original desire of Tsar Peter the Great for a "Window on Europe".  The video, which captures virtually all of the major sights of the city, was filmed using a Zenmuse X7 camera mounted on a DJI Inspire 2 drone.  This video won the Cities & Urban category at the second annual AirVuz Drone Video Awards.

Moscow: The Desperation of Winter

The title of this video, "Desperation of Moscow in Winter" is evocative of the evacuation of Napoleon's starved Grand Armee from the Russian city in the winter of 1812 and the stopping of Adolph Hitler's Wehrmacht at the gates of the city in the famously cold winter of 1941. St. Petersburg, once known as Leningrad and briefly as Petrograd, is the Russian city built on a natural port of the Baltic Sea by Peter the Great in the early 18th century. It was designed to be a "window on Europe" and a means for Russia to join the ranks of the great European powers. Top contributor Timelab.pro, used the DJI Inspire 2 drone and Zenmuse X7 camera to create this magnificent tour of this amazing city, that was once the capital of Russia for two centuries.

Lakhta Centre: Europe's Tallest Skyscraper

Lakhta Center is a skyscraper project in the outskirts of St. Petersburg.  When the tower was topped out in early 2018, it became the tallest building not just in Russia, but in all of Europe.  Top contributor Timelab.pro used a DJI Inspire 2 drone to create a breathtaking aerial video of this amazing and supermodern, mixed-use structure that has 87 floors and reaches a rooftop height of 462 meters (just over 1.5k ft.) and has taken almost seven years to build.

Lake Ladoga, Republic of Karelia

Contributor shulmanaerial created this amazing drone video of Lake Ladoga in northwestern Russia. The footage in this video is shot from the northern part of the lake in the Republic of Karelia which is part of the Russian Federation.  In frozen form, the lake was the site of the famous "Road of Life" which was used to supply nearby Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) which was subject to a brutal hunger seige by Nazi Germany during World War II.

New World: The Crimean Peninsula (Inspired by William Blake)

Contributor Feel Alive created this magnificent drone video of the Crimean Peninsula in southern Russia.  The Peninsula, which is largely covered in mountains, juts out into the northern Black Sea.  Long part of the Russian Empire, the Crimea was initially part of the Ukraine when the Soviet Union dissolved in the early 1990's.  In 2014, in a controversial vote, Crimea elected to secede from the Ukraine and join Russia.  It's considered amongst the most naturally beautiful areas in Eastern Europe.

Sochi is a Russian city on the eastern end of the Black Sea, at the edge of the Caucasus region which connects Europe to Asia. Sochie took the world's center stage in 2014 when it hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXII Winter Olympic Games. More recently, it hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup Games and the Russian Grand Prix. Carry Studio used a drone to create a beautiful aerial portrait of this charming city at golden hour.

Prepare to be amazed by this hyperlapse of drone footage from Russia's fourth largest city and one of its most important business centers.  Ekaterinburg lies on the eastern side of the Ural mountains, which divide the European and Asian continents.  It acts as the key gateway to the vast Siberian region which lies to its east.  Famously, it was the site of one of the great crimes of the 20th century: the muder of the Tsar of Russia and his family by Bolshevik revolutionaries in 1918.

Mt. Elbrus: Russia's Tallest Peak (5642 m)

In this video, you'll get a magnificent look at the highest mountain in Russia.  Mt. Elbrus is lcoated in the southern part of the country, near the border with Georgia.  It's a dormant volcano.  It's peak sits 5.6k meters (about 18.5k ft.) above sea level.  Geologically, it is a mere infant, having been formed only about 2.5 million years ago.  It is believed to have last erupted around 2,000 years ago.  The tallest mountain in Russia, it marked the furthest by the armies of Nazi Germany during World War II.

Siberian Flights: Along the Lena River

Contributor Adrianotrapani created this magnificent video from western Siberia in Russia.  It was shot in a district of the Irkust Oblast, which lies just to the west of Lake Baikhal.  The video was shot along the Lena River, one of the three great rivers which drain Siberia into the Arctic Sea.  Drawing from the same watershed as Lake Baikhal (the world's largest freshwater lake measured by water volume), the waterway runs over 4.3k mi. (almost 2.7k mi.), forming a giant delta in the Laptev Sea in the Arctic Circle.

Lake Baikal, Russia by GoPro Karma Drone

Vadim779 used a GoPro Hero 7 Black mounted to a Karma drone to create this amazing aerial view of a partly frozen Lake Baikal in Russia. The great lake was formed by a giant rift running across a portion of Siberia.  With a surface area of just over 31k square km. (about 11k square mi.), it's the world's seventh largest lake.  Where Baikal truly stands out though is it's depth - with a max depth of over 1.6km (just over a mile), it's the world's deepest lake, and it's also #1 in terms of water volume.

Tolyatti on the Volga, Fall 2018

Amongst European rivers, the Volga is in a class by itself.  It's the longest river on the continent and also its largest by discharge volume.  Its 3.5k km (almost 2.2k mi.) course lies entirely within Russia, and most of the country's major cities are on the river or its tributaries.  In this drone video from Maksx, you'll get a great view of the river as it winds through Tolyatti, a mid-sized city which lies on one of the rivers great bends in its journey southwards towards the Caspian Sea.

Most of the footage is from the Moscow, Black Sea, and Caucasus regions, with a good deal of footage from the area around Sochi where the 2014 Winter Olympics were held. From snowcapped mountains and palm trees, to traffic filled streets and military exercises, this film will give you some amazing bird's eye views of modern Russia.

Deep North: Teriberka, Russia

Check out this amazing drone video of far northern Russia, compliements of contributor Aleksandr.  The area filmed is Teriberka, and it's very near the northernmost point of Europe.  It's in the Oblast (province) of Murmansk, a bit to the northeast of the (river) port city of the same name.  It sits on the Berents Sea, which is considered to be part of the Arctic Ocean.  As you'll see, it's a stunningly beautiful area in the warmer months.  Located well above the Arctic Circle, it's completely iced in during the winter.

Contributor and drone pilot Garry Studios created this marvelous aerial video of Adygea, one of the republics which make up southern Russia.  Adygea lies on the northern fringe of the Caucasus range, roughly due east from Krasnodar (the largest city in the region) and due north from Socchi (the 2014 Winter Olympics host city).  With a stunningly beautiful landscape, Adgyea is crossed by many rivers, the largest being the Kuban, the most important waterway in the North Caucasus region.

Top contributor Sergei Pinin created this amazing aerial tour of Karelia, one of the northernmost provinces of Russia.  Karelia is located northwest of Lake Ladoga and St. Petersburg.  It's home to some of the most iconic looking natural scenery in Russia's Northwest Federal District.  The province has a long border with Finland, and parts of it were part of Finland prior to the Russo-Finnish War of 1939-1940.  Enjoy the bird's eye views of this stunning northern landscape.

Welcome to Krasnodar

Krasnodar is one of the most important cities in southern Russia.  It is situated in the triangle formed by the Black Sea and its Sea of Azov extension, on the Kuban River.  Depending on the area being counted, it's somewhere amongst the top 15-20 cities in Russia in terms of population. It's part of an area known as the Kuban, which was an area settled by the Cossacks, in part as a means for Russia to protect itself from incursions into the heart of Russia by the Ottoman Empire.

Contributor smmaxim created this stunning drone video of the Altai Mountains in Siberian Russia.  The mountain range actually extends across four countries - Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.  Because of the lack of passes, the mountains are notoriously hard to access, making for some of the most remote lands in Asia.  With numerous rivers, streams, and gigantic lakes, it makes for some stunning scenery, perhaps all the more so because it is so remote.

Check out this drone video from the very southernmost province of Russia, compliments of contributor Rasul Abdurazakov.  Dagestan is the southernmost republic in the North Caucasus Region, the southernmost of Russia's official regions.  Dagestan is in the heart of the great Caucasus region which straddles Europe and Asia.  It has a long coastline on the Caspian Sea, and a mountainous interior. It's known as the most ethnically diverse of Russia's republics, with a large Muslim population.

Winter Trip to Nizhniy Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important cities in Russia's Volga region.  It sits about halfway down the great waterway, the most important in the country.  During the Soviet era, the city was known as Gorky in honor of the great Russian writer.  One of Russia's great cultural centers, for a time in the Middle Ages it was a larger and more important city than Moscow.  Currently, it's the center of a signficant river tourism trade along the Volga.  Check it out from above in this drone video from robert_msk.

Sakhalin: Discovery with a Land Rover

Sakhalin is a giant island in Far Eastern Russia in the Northern Pacific Ocean.  It lies in Siberia, almost 6,400 km (almost 4,000 mi) from the Russian capital in Moscow.  In this remarkable video, contributor Vision.One used a drone to create an aerial perspective of an off-road event on Sakhalin organized by Land Rover.  The video follows a group of 4x4 land rovers as they trek across this enormous yet remote island in the far reaches of Northeast Asia.

The Caucasus Mountains are Calling

Check out this stunning drone video from the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia, compliments of contributor Tanya Shkondina.  It was shot around the Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort in Russia's North Caucasus Region.  Rosa Khutor hosted many of the skiing events of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which were hosted by Sochi.  Mt. Roza, its highest peak, is about 2.3kk meters (7.6k ft.) above sea level and is reachable by gondola; the vertical drop from the peak is about 1.75k meters or about 5.8k ft.
