Los Angeles was slower to develop a world class skyline compared to New York and Chicago, despite long ago surpassing Chicago to become the USA's second largest city.  With a skyscraper building boom in the 1980's and an even bigger one in the 2010's, LA now has a skyline which matches the size of the city.  In this remarkable video, contributor Glazed Aerials flew a drone amidst the canyons of downtown LA to provide an amazing aerial perspective of this ever changing city.

San Pedro: The Port of Los Angeles

mavictraveler

Perhaps more than any other major city, Los Angeles owes its existence to the sheer power of human will.  It's miraculous enough that a metropolitan area of over 15 million can exist in a region with almost no freshwater resources, but equally amazing is how Greater Los Angeles, with no natural harbor, was able to become home to the USA's largest and second largest ports.  In this drone video by mavictraveler, you'll get a bird's eye view of the Port of Los Angeles, sometimes called America's Port.

The Fox Plaza building is situated in Century City, a sort of "satellite downtown" for LA's West Side, near the interchange between the Santa Monica and San Diego Freeways.  Built on an old 20th Century Fox backlot, Century City is generally regarded as the capital of the worldwide entertainment industry.  Fitting, then, that Fox Plaza was the scene of the finale of Die Hard, the 1988 action blockbuster.  Contributor Mavictraveler created this drone video of the building, which was completed in 1987.

For 40 years, the tallest building in Los Angeles was City Hall.  Completed in 1928, at the peak of the city's most frenetic decade of growth, the architectural masterpiece stands 138 meters (453 ft.) above the downtown streets.  It's been used as a filming location for many movies and TV series.  In its best-known movie appearance, City Hall "stood in" for police headquarters in the 1997 modern noir classic, LA Confidential.  You can see City Hall from a drone perspective in this video by mavictraveler.

It would be hard to overstate the importance of international shipping to the economy of Greater Los Angeles.  The area is home to not just the USA's largest container port (the Port of Los Angeles) but also its second largest: the Port of Long Beach.   In 2017, the two ports on San Pedro Bay together handled about 17 million 20-foot equivalent containers (TEU's), roughly 3x the number handled by their closest competitor.  Here is a drone video of the Long Beach port, compliments of mavictraveler.

Although surfing didn't originate in California, it was in the Golden State where an obscure activity which originated in the South Pacific migrated (by way of Hawaii) and became transformed into a mainstream activity seen throughout the world.  The cauldron where this occurred was in the string of beach communities west of Los Angeles from Huntington Beach to Malibu.  Contributor Sky.shots brings us this drone video of surfing in this legendary area, now referred to as Silicon Beach.

The town was built by millionaire Abbot Kinney in the early 1900's, who bought a stretch of coastline south of Santa Monica and decided to call it Venice in recognition of the canals which were needed to drain its marshes and make it habitable.  Today, it's one of the most fashionable spots along the line of beach communities referred to as Silicon Beach.

Sunset in Downtown Los Angeles

Dave Yip

DAve Yip created this amazing aerial video of downtown Los Angeles at sunset.  As LA grew into the ranks of the USA's largest cities, it was often derided for not having a skyline worthy of a large city.  For example, it didn't have a single large building over 150 meters (around 500 ft.) until 1968, by which point New York and Chicago had dozens.  That's changed thanks to a series of skyscraper building booms which began in the late 1960's, the latest of which is still very much in progress.

Of all the depictions of Los Angeles in the movies, the dystopian LA in the "future year" of 2019 in the cult sci fi film Blade Runner is one of the most well known.  One of the most important filming locations for the 1982 movie was the Bradbury Building in downtown LA, which you'll see from above in this drone video by mavictraveler.  While it's appeared in other movies, the 1893 landmark is best known as the filming location for J.F. The Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was the venue for the Trial of the [20th] Century - twice.  In 1971, following what was billed as the longest and highest profile criminal trial in history, a cult leader named Charles Manson and his followers were convicted for the brutal killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others in the so-called Helter-Skelter Murders.  That proved to be a mere warmup for another West Side multiple homicide trial - that of OJ Simpson, who was acquitted here in 1995.
