Slovenia is one of the six nations to emerge from the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990's. Unlike its former confederates, which are considered to be part of Southeastern Europe, Slovenia is generally deemed to be part of Central Europe. However classified, it is home to some of the most spectacular scenery on the entire European continent, from alpine lakes to magnificent waterfalls to well-preserved medieval castles. Bled's Lake is in the Julian Alps of Slovenia. It takes less than an hour to drive there from the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana. The church featured in this 4K aerial piece by Alberto Ardit is Cerkev Marijinega Vnebovzetja or the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. It is reached only by boat and has been there since the 9th century (although its current form has only been around since the late 17th century). It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Slovenia.

The Julian Alps extend from northern Italy westwards into Slovenia. A sub-range of the larger Alps system, their highest peak is Mt. Triglav, which stands 2.9k meters (9.4k ft) and lies in Slovenia's Triglav National Park. In this video, contributor Jus Medic and a friend took a drone and hiked to the top of Dolkova Spica, a slightly smaller mountain in Slovenia, capturing Mt. Triglav in the distance. Begunje is a small town in northern Slovenia, not far from the country's long northern border with Austria. The town, which dates to the 11th century, is home to an extremely well preserved town center and a magnificent castle which originally dates to the 15th century and which was rebuilt in the 17th century. Pericnik is a waterfall in northern Slovenia, near the country's northern border with Austria. It is actually a system of two waterfalls, with the lower (larger) falls having a drop of 52 meters (171 ft.). Situated in Triglav national park, it's is one of the best known sights in this mountainous land which was once part of Yugoslavia. Even though the Age of Steam has passed, there remains a profound fascination with the idea that giant trains could be propelled with steam generated by burning coal. Near Lake Bled, Slovenia, an old bridge carries steam trains across the Vintgar Gorge. It's just a few km/mi from Lake Bled, probably the most well known spot in the country. Contributor Kohlman Aerials made this short but impressive drone video of this scene, which appears to be something out of the 19th century.

Contributor Bananaway used a drone to film what has to be one of the best spots for stand-up-paddleboarding in southeastern Europe. Lake Cerknica is in southwestern Slovenia. The size of the lake varies dramatically over the course of the year; at times it is the country's largest lake, while at other times it mostly drains and becomes more of a swampy wetland. During the right season, its calm waters and extensive marshy areas make for some epic paddleboarding!

Begunjscica is a mountain in the Karawank Mountain range, an extension of the Alps mountains which straddles the border of Austria and Slovenia to the south. Contributor Kohlman Aerial used a drone to capture the stunning beauty of this alpine redoubt in winter. The mountain's highest peak, aptly named Big Peak, is a bit over 2k meters (a bit over 6.5k ft.) above sea level. It's a fairly easy climb that can be tackled in a partial day and without technical climbing equipment.

Begunjščica is a ridge-type mountain in a range called the Karawanks, which run for about 120 km (75 mi.) along the country's northern border with Austria. Its highest peak is a bit under 2.1k meters (a little under 6.8k ft.). The range is part of the Southern Limestone Alps group, which runs roughly east-west across northern Italy, southern Austria, and northern Slovenia.

Bohinj valley is a basin in the Upper Carniolan region of Slovenia, lying in the northwestern part of the former Yugoslav confederation nation. The geographically isolated valley (with an ethnically distinctive population) is crossed by the Sava Bohinjka river and is also the site of Lake Bohinj, a glacial lake. Kohlman aerial filmed this stunning site to gain a bird's eye perspective of the lake and the Julian Alps peaks of Italy and Austria which lie just beyond it.

The Soča is a river which originates in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia and flows southwards into northeastern Italy, discharging into the Adriatic Sea. The river's valley in Slovenia features some of the country's most beautiful scenery. Here's a bird's eye view of the most prominent landmark in the Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana. Ljubljana Castle sits atop a hill in the city, which lies in the middle of the country. It dates to the 11th century, and was originally a fortress. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was largely rebuilt as a classic castle - ie, a residence. It overlooks the downtown of the city and is the largest tourist destination in the capital. The video was created by Skydronauts using a DJI Mavic Pro drone.

Check out this stunning drone video of a well-known waterfall in Slovenia, compliments of contributor enricocif. It's called the Boka waterfall, and it's located in the western part of this Central European country. The two-stage waterfall is fed by an underwater spring which drains the nearby mountains. It's first stage is 106 meters (just under 350 ft.), followed by a second drop of 33 meters (just under 110 ft.). The waterfall is near a road which runs between the towns of Bovec and Kobarid.

One of the great natural treasures of Slovenia is the Triglav National Park. The only national park in this Central European country, it's located in the Julian Alps in the northwestern part of Slovenia, near the Italian and Austrian borders. In this drone video by top contributor Jus Medic, you'll get an aerial perspective of two of the taller mountains in the park: Mt. Jalovec with a peak altitude of around 2.65k meters (around 8.7k ft.) and Slemenova Spica with a peak elevation of around 1.9k meters or about 6.2k ft.

Contributor androzma created this stunning 4k drone video of a winegrowing region of northern Slovenia. It's called Brdo Srne, and it's located a short distance to the southeast of Lake Bled. It's part of the Goriska Brda winegrowing region, which is sometimes referred to as the Tuscany of Slovenia. The region is in the lower and flatter areas of the country south of the Julian Alps. It's called Kamen Castle, and it's at the entrance to the Draga Valley near the country's northern border with Austria. Distinguished by its square Romanesque tower, the castle dates to the 12th century. Here's an aerial (summertime) view of a well-known ski resort in Slovenia, compliments of androzma. It's called Krvavec, and it's located in the municipality of Cerklje na Gorenjskem in the north-central part of the country. Krvavec is the second-largest ski resort in the country. The resort features 30 ski slopes. It's only about ten km (around 6 mi.) from Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, giving it the distinction of being the closest ski resort to an international airport anywhere in Europe!
