Long Beach: LA Basin's Second City

From the Queen Mary to the Harbor, Los Angeles

Long Beach, California is the second largest city in the massive urban conurbation known as Greater Los Angeles, second only to LA itself.  In contrast to its northern neighbor, Long Beach is all about the ocean.  It sits on San Pedro Bay, the closest thing that Greater LA has to a natural harbor.  In this video by Skybounddrones, you'll get a bird's eye view of the Long Beach waterfront, including the Queen Mary cruise ship (permanently docked there) and its harbor, the country's #2 container port.

LA Coliseum

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, from Above

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the most storied sports venues in the USA.  Built in the 1920's, it was expanded to be the prime venue for the 1932 Summer Olympics, a role it replayed when LA hosted its second Olympics in 1984.  At times, it was also home to the LA Rams and Raiders of the National Football League, all the while the home field of the storied University of Southern California (USC) football team.  In this video, DeeFair23 gives us a bird's eye view of the great sports venue.

Silicon Beach

Silicon Beach Surfers - Malibu, CA

Although surfing didn't originate in California, it was in the Golden State where an obscure activity which originated in the South Pacific migrated (by way of Hawaii) and became transformed into a mainstream activity seen throughout the world.  The cauldron where this occurred was in the string of beach communities west of Los Angeles from Manhattan Beach Beach to Malibu.  Contributor Sky.shots brings us this drone video of surfing in this legendary area, now commonly referred to as Silicon Beach.

LA's Tallest Skyscrapers

Running from the Maze

Dave Yip...

Contributor Dave Yp created this beautiful aerial of downtown Los Angeles, which is in the midst of one of its strongest ever building booms.  It features shots of the impressive skyline from several different directions.  You'll get some great views of US Bank (originally Library) Tower, which held the title of the city's tallest building for nearly three decades, as well as the Wilshire Grand building which topped it in 2017.  You'll also see the Aon (originally ARCO) Building, which was tallest from 1973-1989.

Port of Los Angeles

San Pedro: The Port of Los Angeles

Perhaps more than any other major city, Los Angeles owes its existence to the power of human will.  It's miraculous enough that a giant metropolis can exist in a region with almost no freshwater resources, and then there is this: Greater Los Angeles, with no natural harbor, was able to become home to the USA's two busiest seaports: the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  In this drone video by  contributor mavictraveler, you'll get a bird's eye view of the Port of Los Angeles, also known as America's Port.

Wilshire Grand: LA's Tallest Building

Droning LA's Wilshire Grand

In 2017, US Bank Tower (also known as Library Tower) was displaced as the tallest building in Los Angeles.  The new height champion is the 73 story Wilshire Grand Center, a mixed use building which has an architectural height of 335 meters (1.1k ft.).  The distinctive glass structure, topped by a Korean Airlines logo, has transformed the skyline of America's second largest city.  You can see the Wilshire Grand from a new perspective in this drone video by mavictraveler.  The video was shot with a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone.

University of California - Los Angeles

University of California - Los Angeles

While Los Angeles is too big to be considered a "college town", it would be hard to overstate the importance of its post-secondary institutions.  Among the most prominent of these is the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), which is located in the Westwood neighborhood on LA's West Side.  The school has an enrollment of about 45,000, over half of which is in the university's graduate and professional schools.  In this drone video by caldroneflyer, you'll get a bird's eye view of the UCLA campus.

Contributor Dave Yip created this amazing aerial video of downtown Los Angeles at sunset.  As LA grew into the ranks of the USA's largest cities, it was often derided for not having a skyline worthy of a large city.  For example, it didn't have a single large building over 150 meters (around 500 ft.) until 1968, by which point New York and Chicago had dozens.  That's changed thanks to a series of skyscraper building booms which began in the late 1960's, the latest of which is still very much in progress.

Century City: Fox Plaza

Fox Plaza, Century City

The Fox Plaza building is situated in Century City, a sort of "satellite downtown" for LA's West Side, near the interchange between the Santa Monica and San Diego Freeways.  Built on an old 20th Century Fox backlot, Century City is generally regarded as the capital of the worldwide entertainment industry.  Fitting, then, that Fox Plaza was the scene of the finale of Die Hard, the 1988 action blockbuster.  Contributor Mavictraveler created this drone video of the building, which was completed in 1987.

Balboa Island, Newport Beach

2019 Balboa Island, Newport Beach

Greater Los Angeles is immense; it includes five counties and is approaching a population of nearly 20 million.  Orange County is the most populous of the satellite counties, lying to the south of Los Angeles County.  The third largest county in California by population, it's mostly known for its beach communities, the most famous of which is Newport Beach.  In this video by Danielnash, you'll get an epic bird's eye view of Balboa, a small island which is part of Newport Beach and sits in its harbour.

The Getty Museum

The Getty Museum, Los Angeles

Barely two decades old, the Getty Museum is already considered one of the great cultural landmarks of Los Angeles, California.  Built in the hills of the Brentwood neighborhood just off the 405 freeway, the museum complex was funded by a trust established by the oilman J. Paul Getty, once the world's richest man as well as one of its most notable collectors of art.  Considered one of the top art museums in the USA, you can check it out from above in this drone video filmed with a DJI Mavic Pro 2 by Caldroneflyer.

Santa Monica's Famous Pier

Santa Monica Pier

The imprecisely predefined "West LA" consists of a series of beach communities, most of which are independent cities.  The largest and most well known of these is Santa Monica, which lies more or less due west from downtown LA.  A city of nearly 90,000 residents as of 2018, its main pier is a popular attraction for tourists and locals.  In this drone video by Lucaspinhel, you'll get a bird's eye look at the famous pier, where actor Tom Hanks ended up when he  "ran clear to the ocean" in the movie Forrest Gump (1994)

Newport Beach, Orange County

Newport Beach / Air 2S

AirVuz contributor AerialWings used a DJI Air 2S drone to create this excellent aerial video of Newport Beach, California.  Newport Beach is one of the largest and well-known communities in Orange County, which is part of Greater Los Angeles.  Situated on Newport Harbor (a body of water which includes several islands), Newport Beach has become the unofficial sailing capital of the USA's West Coast.  It's home to nearly 10k boats, one of the country's largest concentrations of recreational marine vehicles.

FPV Shots of Post-Quarantine LA

Golden Hour FPV-Los Angeles

Top AirVuz contributor and pilot rememorales brings us this fantastic first person view (FPV) tour of Los Angeles, California as the city began to emerge from its Covid-19 quarantine in the Spring of 2020.  The video opens with a shot along one of LA's Pacific Ocean beaches, before heading for the canyons of downtown LA.  Here you'll be treated to some epic shots of the Art Deco classic Los Angeles Central Public Library, some skyscraper dives, and shots along the still nearly-empty streets of the USA's second-largest city.

It was shot from the Echo Park neighborhood, which lies just to the north of downtown Los Angeles.  The shot was taken facing south, towards the downtown skyline.  You don't see it, but if the shot had continued for another five seconds then you would have seen another Los Angeles landmark on your left: Dodger Stadium.  Home of the city's Major League Baseball team,  the stadium is located in Chavez Ravine, which is the next neighborhood to the east of Echo Park.

Beverly Hills, CA: 90210

Beverly Hills, CA

Beverly Hills, California may be the home of the best-known zip code in the USA - 90210.  Situated about ten miles west of downtown Los Angeles, this community of approximately 35,000 people has become synonymous with wealth and privilege. Founded in 1914 by investors who failed to find oil here, it's been featured in countless films and TV shows, including the 1984 blockbuster Beverly Hills Cop and the hit TV series 90210 (the Beverly Hills Zip Code).  You can see the gilded town from above in this drone video by caldroneflyer.

Venice: Beach City of Canals

Taking Flight over the Venice Canals Historic District

One look at this drone video from contributor Skybounddrones will tell you where the city of Venice, California got its name. The town was built in the early 1900's by millionaire Abbot Kinney, who bought a stretch of coastline south of Santa Monica and decided to call it Venice in recognition of the canals which were needed to drain its marshes and make it habitable.  Today, it's one of the most fashionable spots along the line of beach communities which are commonly referred to as Silicon Beach.

The Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory

hollywood & griffith observatory

JN Drone ...

Contributor Caldina3188 managed to aerially film two of the more important landmarks of Los Angeles: the "Hollywood" sign and Griffith Observatory.  Both are located in the Hollywood Hills, which are basically foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains that lie to the northwest of downtown LA.  The sign, which stands almost 14 meters (about 45 ft.) tall, was built in the 1920's to promote real estate development in the then-infant Tinseltown.  The obervatory is built atop another of the hills and was completed in 1935.

Beverly Hills: Warner Brothers Estate

The Warner Brothers Estate, Beverly Hills

Wild & Fre...

Wild & Free Travel created this amazing video in connection with marketing of one of the most expensive properties in California.  The Warner Brothers Estate was the home of Warner Brothers co-founder Harry Warner, the older brother of the better known Jack Warner.  Located in Bevery Hills, the it was once the home of Marilyn Monroe and much later it "played the role" of the OJ Simpson estate in Brentwood for the FX TV series "The People vs. OJ Simpson".  The property was recently listed at $36 million.

Staples Center

Soaring Over Staples Center, Downtown Los Angeles

Contributor Jayxlamar created this amazing aerial video of the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.  The stadium hosts the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers of the National Basketball League, the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's' National Basketball Association, and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.  It's also a major venue for concerts, boxing matches, and other major indoor events.  Built in 1999, it's credited as being a major factor in the revival of downtown Los Angeles.

Los Angeles City Hall

Los Angeles City Hall

For 40 years, the tallest building in Los Angeles was City Hall.  Completed in 1928, at the peak of the city's most frenetic decade of growth, the architectural masterpiece stands 138 meters (453 ft.) above the downtown streets.  It's been used as a filming location for many movies and TV series.  In its best-known movie appearance, City Hall "stood in" for police headquarters in the 1997 modern noir classic, LA Confidential.  You can see City Hall from a drone perspective in this video by mavictraveler.

Port of Long Beach

The Port of Long Beach, California

It would be hard to overstate the importance of international trade to the economy of Greater Los Angeles.  The area is home to the USA's largest container port (the Port of Los Angeles) as well as its second largest: the Port of Long Beach.   In 2017, the two ports on San Pedro Bay (directly south of downtown Los Angeles) together handled about 17 million 20-foot equivalent containers (TEU's), roughly 3x the figure for their closest competitor.  Here is a drone video of the Long Beach port, compliments of mavictraveler.

USC Campus

Drone Tour of the USC Campus

One of the less heralded factors behind the vitality of Los Angeles is its base of high quality colleges and universities.  One of the largest and best known is the University of Southern California (USC), which is situated just to the southwest of downtown LA.  Its enrollment of over 45,000 is roughly 60% graduate and professional school students.  It's also known for its highly regarded film school as well as its powerhouse football program.  Check it out from above in this drone video by mavictraveler.

Echo Park Lake

Echo Park Lake, Los Angeles CA

Wasim Maza...

Contributor Wasim Mazareh created this beautiful drone video of Echo Park Lake in the heart of Los Angeles, California.  Situated a short distance north of downtown and just west of Dodger Stadium, Echo Park is one of the most well known districts of central LA.  Located immediately to the north of the Hollywood Freeway, the lake was the filming location for one of the most memorable scenes in Roman Polanski's 1974 cinematic modern noir masterpiece Chinatown, starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.

LA Viaduct: Water for a Desert City

Los Angeles - Aqueduct Cascades (5 Freeway)

Nick Nack ...

One of the improbable aspects of the rise of Los Angeles is the fact that a giant city sprang up in what is essentially a desert.  Los Angeles tackled this seemingly unsolveable problem by importing freshwater from Northern California, diverting runoff from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to allow a metropolis of over 15 million to emerge in an otherwise inhospitable environment.  In this drone video by Nick Nack Films, you'll get an aerial view of one of the aquaducts used to bring precious water into LA.

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory Aerial Tour

Contributor Sky.shots brings us this awesome drone video of Griffith Observatory, one of the most iconic landmarks of Los Angeles.  Located in the Hollywood Hills near the famous Hollywood sign, the observatory has been allowing astronomers to gaze into the heavens since 1935.  The observatory has been used as a filming scene for numerous movies.  Most famously, the observatory was used to shoot the climactic scene of the 1955 classic film Rebel Without a Cause, starring James Dean and Natalie Wood.

Catalina Island

Drone Footage | DJI Mavic Air 2 | 4K Catalina Island, CA

Brand-new AirVuz contributor chao.charlie used a DJI Mavic Air 2 drone to bring us this fantastic 60 second aerial video of California's Santa Catalina Island.  Part of the Channel Islands, it's about a 40 minute ferryboat ride from Long Beach.  Most of the video was shot around Avalon, Catalina's main settlement, which lies on its southeastern shore.  The video features some excellent footage of the island's best-known landmark: the Catalina Casino, which (despite its name) is a gathering place and is not associated with gambling.

Caltech Campus, Pasadena

California Institute of Technology

The California Institute of Technology (known informally as Caltech) is one of the world's most well-regarded research universities. It's situated in Pasadena, northeast of downtown Los Angeles.  As of late 2018, the school's alumni and faculty include an incredible 73 Nobel laureates.  While Caltech has historically kept a fairly low profile, its appearance on the hit comedy Big Bang TV series has elevated awareness of the school.  You can see the Caltech campus from above in this video by Mavictraveler.

Skyscrapers of DTLA

Above LA - Aerial

For over 25 years, US Bank Tower was the tallest skyscraper in Los Angeles, with a height of over 300 meters or 1.0k ft..  Opened in 1989 as Library Tower, the 73 story building reaches a height of 310 meters (just over 1.0k ft.).  In 2017, the circular tower was eclipsed by the (also 73 floor) Wilshire Grand Center, which topped out at over 335 meters (about 1.1k ft.).    In this drone video by AerialClip, you'll get some epic views of the older building as well as the usurper as it was being completed.

Historic Bradbury Building

LA's Bradbury Building

Of all the depictions of Los Angeles in the movies, the dystopian LA in the "future year" of 2019 in the cult sci fi film Blade Runner is one of the most well known.  One of the most important filming locations for the 1982 movie was the Bradbury Building in downtown LA, which you'll see from above in this drone video by mavictraveler.  While it's appeared in other movies, the 1893 landmark is best known as the filming location for J.F. Sebastian's apartment where the movie's final, climactic scene occurs.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

Walt Disney Concert Hall

After decades of consolidations in LA's most important industries (financial services, aerospace, and entertainment), a new leader of corporate Los Angeles has emerged: the Walt Disney Company.  The media giant, which originated in Burbank in the San Fernando Valley, has its name attached to one of downtown LA's more prominent cultural landmarks: the Walt Disney Concert Hall.  Check out this Frank Gherty designed masterpiece in this drone video by contributor and pilot myflyingeyes.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula

The beautiful cliffs of Palos Verdes

If you are standing near the ocean in one of the beach towns west of Los Angeles such as Venice, looking south you will see a land mass which effectively creates the southern end of Santa Monica Bay.  What you are seeing is the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a landform which juts out into the Pacific from just west of Long Beach.  It's known for its steep cliffs dropping down to the ocean, and it's home to some of LA's swankier suburbs.  Check out these amazing cliffs from above in this drone video by skybounddrones.

Emerging from Quarantine in Hollywood

Liberate Los Angeles

Greenz By ...

AirVuz contributor Goodgreenz used a drone to film himself skateboarding through the streets of Hollywood as Southern California began to emerge from its nearly two months under community quarantine during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.  As you'll see in the video, some of the USA's busiest streets remained empty as social distancing measures and kept the vast majority of LA's population indoors.  It makes for a fascinating if haunting sites, with great shots of familiar landmarks like the Capitol Records Building and the famous Hollywood sign.

FPV Diving LA's Skyscrapers

Diving DTLA #sendit( FPV Freestyle)

The skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles make for a compelling backdrop in this first person view (FPV) video by contributor and FPV pilot teenofpv.  Against a nighttime background, he takes on two of the more notable skyscrapers from the city's financial district.  The first building dived is a skyscraper known as Figueroa at Wilshire, a 53 story office tower located at the intersection of two of downtown's main thoroughfares.  The second building is E&Y Plaza, a 41 story building located a block down on Figueroa.

US Bank Tower, Santa Monica, and More

Los Angeles Drone Video

For a first upload to AirVuz, Derrick.y brings us this marvelous aerial tour of Los Angeles, California.  The video opens with a spectacular shot of the US Bank Tower; standing 310 meters (just over 1k ft.) above the streets of downtown LA, the 73 story skyscraper once known as Library Tower was the tallest in the City of Angels until topped by the Wilshire Grand in 2017.  From there it's on to the Santa Monica Pier, the famous Hollywood sign in the hills overlooking West LA, and more.

The Long Beach Waterfront

Rainbow Harbor - Long Beach, CA

Marty Mitc...

Long Beach, California has a long and symbiotic relationship with its northern neighbor LA.  For decades, its Pike amusement zone was the biggest in the state, and the oil discovery on Signal Hill in the 1920's helped to drive the growth of the LA auto culture.  After years of decay due to the massive downsizing of the aerospace and defense companies which were once huge employers here, the Long Beach waterfront has undergone a renaissance.  Check it out from above in this aerial by Marty Mitchell.

Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach DJI Phantom 4 Pro Plus

With a population of over 200,000, Huntington Beach, California is the largest of the Orange County beach towns south of Los Angeles.  The town was named after Henry Huntington, a powerful Southern California railway man who helped to conceive of Orange County as a means to extend his great LA rail empire.   Huntington Beach is easily distinguished by its pier, whose bright orange roof contrasts brilliantly with the ocean waters.    See it from a bird's eye in this drone video by dronestarvisions.

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot zhoucreative brings us this fantastic FPV video using footage he shot for the 27th Critics' Choice Awards, which was held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles in March of 2022.  The famously crescent-shaped hotel is one of the landmarks of Century City, a sort of "satellite" downtown (and one-time 20th Century Fox backlot) on LA's West Side which is considered the epicenter of the city's entertainment industry.  This video made the FPV Pilots to Watch list.

The Los Angeles Country Club

The Los Angeles Country Club

Caldroneflyer created this aerial mini-tour of some of the golf holes of the Los Angeles Country Club in Beverly Hills, California.  The current location dates to 1911.  In 2019, the Los Angeles Country Club North Course was ranked at the #19 spot in the widely-followed Golf Digest ranking of the top 100 courses in the USA.  It's hosted numerous major tournaments, most recently the Walker Cup in 2017.  And another big tournament is coming here soon: the LACC is scheduled to host the US Open Golf Championship in 2023.

Malibu's Point Dume

Point Dume: Malibu, California

Contributor and pilot mavictraveler used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone to create this video of Point Dume in Malibu, California.  Located on the north side of Santa Monica Bay west of Los Angeles, Point Dume is the site of one of the most iconic scenes in the history of cinema: the finale of the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes.   It was here that astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) stumbles upon a destroyed Statue of Liberty and realizes that he has landed on a post-nuclear armageddon Planet Earth.

The port currently handles about 7 million 20 foot equivalent containers (TEU's) per year.  That puts it in the #2 spot amongst US ports, second only to its neighbor - the Port of Los Angeles.  The port, which sits on a site of about 13 square km (around 5 square mi.), has about 80 berths. It lies near the mouth of the Los Angeles River on an artificial bay created by the San Pedro Breakwater.

LA County Courthouse

Stanley Mosk Courthouse - Downtown LA

The Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was the venue for the Trial of the (20th) Century - twice.  In 1971, following what was billed as the longest and highest profile criminal trial in history, a cult leader named Charles Manson and his followers were convicted for the brutal killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others in the so-called Helter-Skelter Murders.  That proved to be a mere warmup for another West Side multiple homicide trial - that of OJ Simpson, who was acquitted here in 1995.

The Queen Mary Docked in Long Beach

The RMS Queen Mary

Contributor reggiesurfsax created this marvelous aerial view of a sight in Long Beach, California, a 30 minute drive south of downtown LA at the rare times when traffic is light.  It's the RMS Queen Mary, once one of the world's greatest cruise ships.  Launched in 1934, she was the flag ship of the famed Cunard line, and was considered the most glamorous way to cross the Atlantic Ocean before the jet age.  The 310 meter (just over 1k ft.) ship has been moored in Long Beach Harbor since the 1960's.

LA Quarantine Drone Views

Empty Los Angeles - Coronavirus

Brennan Ma...

Check out this rather haunting drone video from Los Angeles during the Covid-19 pandemic, compliments of brand-new AirVuz contributor Brennan Maxwell.  The video was shot during the first few weeks of the quarantine, when strict social distancing measures imposed at the state, county and city level left most of LA's roads, highways, and other public spaces virtually empty.  The video features footage of the Staples Center, the Los Angeles Zoo, Dodger Stadium, Chinatown, the famous Hollywood sign, the Santa Monica Pier, and much more.

Air + Style L.A.

AirVūz Off...

Air + Style is a snowboarding contest which has freed itself from the constraints of having to take place in the mountains.  While it began life in the 1990's in the Austrian Alps, the contest now sets up snowboard courses wherever space permits.  With extensive use of music, the events have mesmerized many millions of younger extreme sports enthusiasts around the world.  In 2017, AirVuz was selected as a media partner for an Air + Style event in Los Angeles; this video is a recap of the event.
