Transylvania in 4K

Transylvania, Romania

The reputed home of Count Dracula, Transylvania is a large region covering much of northwestern Romania.  Unlike some of the country's other regions, Transylvania was not part of the country when modern Romania was created in the 19th century.  Rather, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, electing to join Romania after World War I.  Contributor Alexgaflig used a drone to create a marvelous portrait of this magical land, situated on a plateau surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains.

Romania's Bicaz Gorge

Cheile Bicazului, Romania

Contributor ChrisCross created this stunning drone video of a massive gorge in the Moldavia region of northeastern Romania.  Bicaz Gorge (Cheile Bicazului) was created by the Bicaz River, which flows on a southwards course into the Danube River and thence to a discharge point into the Black Sea.  One of the most popular rock climbing sites in Europe, it is situated near the border with the neighboring region Transylvania to the west.  The great canyon is now part of the Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park.

Winter in the Carpathians

Winter Wonderland

Winter in Romania is a magical time.  The tree-covered Carpathian Mountains which run through much of the country become tufted in white, providing a winter scene that is visually as appealing as any in Europe.  Contributor BearSkillz, whose previous upload garnered the AirVuz Drone Video of the Week award in late 2018, created this marvelous aerial look at this beautiful country taken at the height of its winter splendor.  Enjoy the views of this winter wonderland in Southeastern Europe.

The Danube Delta

Winter Mode on the Danube

Contributor Mariansterea created this stunning drone video of the Danube River Delta in Romania during the depths of winter.  While the river does occasionally freeze and close to navigation, most winters it appears as it does here: icy, obviously extremely cold, but useable for shipping.  That's a good thing, because freezing effectively cuts large sections of Central and Southeastern Europe off from maritime access through Europe's second longest river and probably its most important.

Romania's Berca Mud Volcanoes

Romania's Mud Volcanoes

Top contributor GeorgeMarcu used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to create this epic aerial video of the Berca Mud Volcanoes, one of the most well known natural sights in Romania.  They are located near the town of Berca, in the Wallachia (Muntenia) region of the country, roughly halfway between Brasov (one of the main cities in the Transylvania region) and the national capital Bucharest.  The structures actually aren't volcanoes; they are caused by saltwater and mud pushed up by gas eruptions thousands of meters/ft. below the surface.

Constanța: Romania's Great Port

Winter in Constanța

Constanta is the principal city of eastern Romania.  Situated on the country's Black Sea coast, its the country's largest seaport as well as the largest of any seaport on the Black Sea.  It's also the oldest settled part of Romania, having been founded over 2,500 years ago.  Constanta is the largest city in the region of Dobrogea, a region which covers the Romanian Black Sea coastline.  In this video, contributor MarianSterea gives us an aerial look at this ancient port city in the dead of winter.

Timisoara: City of Transylvania

Timisoara's Beauty

Check out this amazing drone video of the great Romanian city of Timișoara.  It's located near the western edge of the country, in an area that is sometimes classified as being part of Transylvania but more often is considered to be part of the Banat region which includes parts of Hungary and Serbia.  Timișoara is the third most populous city in Romania, after Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca.  The city played an important role in the conflict between Christianity and the Ottoman Turks in the Middle Ages.

Bucharest: Romania's Capital City

Bucharest: Romania's Capital City

Contributor Mihaiflorea used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to create this aerial video of the Romanian capital and largest city, Bucharest.  Bucharest is part of the country's Wallachia region, which united with the Principality of Moldavia to form the immediate predecessor of modern Romania in 1859.  Bucharest became the national capital of this proto-Romania (then called the United Principalities) in 1862, following an initial three year period in which the city of Iasi served that role.

Maramureș: Northern Romania

Rural Maramures

Maramureș is a historical and cultural region which covers a portion of northern Romania and the western Ukraine.  Most of the region is covered by the mountains and foothills of the Carpathian range which runs across large sections of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.  The region was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries, before coming under the control of the Ottoman Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  In this drone video by Privigyel, you'll get an aerial tour of the rural Romanian Maramureș.

(around 230 km) to the east.

Bran Castle: Home of Dracula(?)

Romania from the Air: Bran Castle

Viajes Los...

Romania's Bran Castle is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the Romanian region of Transylvania.  Much of Bran Castle's fame is linked to one of the great characters of Western literature: Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's gothic 1897 novel, which is loosely based on the historical figure known as Vlad the Impaler.  While the association is likely erroneous, the castle has ever since been known as Dracula's Castle.  Check out the famous landmark from above in this drone video by Viajes Lost Planet.

Fall in Romania's Carpathian Mountains

Fall In The Carpathian Mountains

One of the things which distinguish the Carpathian Mountains from the taller Alps Mountains to their west is the nature of the tree cover.  With their lower altitudes, the eastern range has a much higher mix of deciduous trees (i.e. trees with leaves) vs. coniferous trees.  Among other things, this gives rise to a stunning change of colors in the fall.  Contributor and pilot BearSkillz captured this to beautiful effect in this stunning drone video of the Romanian Carpathians during this magical turn of seasons.
