Check out this stunning springtime aerial view from the Central European country of Slovakia, compliments of DVOW finalist HikeTheWorld.  The area filmed is near the inactive volcano known as Poľana, which is part of the Slovak Central Mountains.  Situated near the geographic center of the country in the Banská Bystrica Region, these mountains in turn are part of the Inner Western Carpathian Mountains.  Poľana is particularly beautiful in the Spring, when the cherry trees which line its gentle slopes blossom.

The highest of the High Tatras is Mt. Gerlach (Gerlachovský štít), which has a maximum elevation of 2.65k meters or about 8.7k ft. and is one of 20+ peaks over 2.5k meters (around 8.2k ft.).

Top AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Zdronu gives us an aerial view of the Slovakian capital city Bratislava shortly after the Central European country went under a lockdown in mid-March, 2020 to halt the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.  The center of a metropolitan area of about 650k, Bratislava is located on the banks of the Danube River.  Slovakia reported its first coronavirus case on March 6, 2020, and the government led by Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini ordered all non-essential businesses closed on March 15.

Top AirVuz contributor roman.malik brings us this stunning wintertime piece from the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia.  Home to the highest peaks in the Carpathian Mountain system, the Tatra's form part of the natural boundary between Slovakia and Poland to the north.  The Tatra range occupies an area of about 800 square km (around 300 square mi.), of which about three-quarters is on Slovakian territory.  Their highest peak, Slovakia's Gerlachovský štít, has an elevation of a bit under 2.7k meters above sea level or about 8.7k ft.

Spis Castle (sometimes called Spisky Castle) in the eastern portion of Slovakia is one of the largest and best known castle ruins in all of Europe. Built in the 13th century and then destroyed by a fire in the late 18th century, the castle is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site.  It's been used as the shooting location for numerous movies, including Dragonheart and the Last Legion.  Contributor Ivan Dovala flew a drone over Spis on a foggy morning and created this sensational bird's eye view.

Bojnice is one of the most famous castles in Slovakia, a country known for its castles.  Built in the 12th century at the town bearing the same name, the great structure lies in the valley of the Nitra River in the central part of the country.  In the late 1800's and early 1900's, it was reconstructed to resemble a French Loire Valley Chateau.  Contributor Hiketheworld flew over Bojnice with a drone to create an amazing aerial view of this landmark, which also houses one of the country's most popular museums.

AirVuz contributor Never Stop Exploring brings us this excellent drone video of Orava Castle, a well-known landmark in the Central European country of Slovakia.  Originally constructed in the 13th century when the area was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, Orava Castle is perched on a rock above its namesake river in Žilina, the northernmost of Slovakia's eight official administrative regions.  It combines elements of Gothic, Neo-Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque styles.  Orava Castle was used to film the 2020 Netflix TV series Dracula.

Beckov Castle is one of the most important castles in Slovakia.  It's in the Nové Mesto nad Váhom District in the western part of the country.  Like many famous Slovakian castles, it was built in the 14th century.  It was reconstructed as a Renaissance fortress in the 16th century, and fell into disuse in the 17th century.  In this video, contributor Guydrory gives us a marvelous bird's eye views of the castle, which was named as one of the top Slovak castles in a recent survey by the Trip Advisor website.

Content creator and drone pilot Pavol Turcani used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this marvelous aerial videos of one of the most well known castle ruins in Slovakia.  Lietava Castle is located in a mountainous area in the northern part of the country.  It was built in the 13th century, a golden age for castle building in Central Europe.  The castle fell into disrepair and its ownership fragmented in the 17th century, following which it was abandoned.  It's now owned by a non-profit organization.

Contributor Pavol Turčani gives us this aerial view of a spectacularly beautiful area of western Slovakia.  It's near the village of Vršatské Podhradie, in the Trenčín Region.  It's in the White Carpathian mountain range, which run across the Czech-Slovak border and are part of the larger Carpathian range.  While the peaks are not especially high (the highest are around 1k meters (3.3k ft.), they feature spectacular rock formations, which are captured in abundance in the video.

Contributor and drone Pilot SVK used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this aerial tour of a famous Slovakian castle which was devastated by a fire in 2012.  Krásna Hôrka Castle is built on a hilltop in the Košice Region, which occupies the southeastern part of the country.  Built by Hungarian noblemen in the 13th century by Hungarian noblemen, it was considered one of the best preserved castles in the country.  In 2012, the castle was devastated by a fire and is currently being rebuilt.

Contributor Pavol Turčani created this stunning drone video of one of the most well known castles in Slovakia. Čachtice Castle is situated in the northwestern Trenčín Region.  The 13th century castle derives its fame in part from its association with a Hungarian noblewoman named Elizabeth Báthory, who was accused of murdering dozens (perhaps hundreds) of people in the castle around the turn of the 16th century.  The castle was used to film the opening scene of Dragonheart (1996) starring Dennis Quaid.

Malá Fatra is a mountain range in north central Slovakia, part of the Western Carpathian Mountains (which go by different names in different countries).  Their highest peak, Veľký Kriváň, has an altitude of about 1.7k meters above sea level (just over 5.6k ft.). Check out this marvelous drone video of Slovakia's Tematín Castle, compliments of contributor Pavol Turčani.  Using a DJI Mavic Pro, he brings out the beauty of this semi-ruined structure in the western region of the country.  Like many of Slovakia's castles, it was built in the 13th century, at a time when most of modern-day Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary.  Tematín Castle fell into its current state after it was besieged during an uprising against Habsburg power in the early 18th century.

Content creator and drone pilot Marian Peciar put together this marvelous aerial video of a nature preserve in the Central European country of Slovakia.  The Súľov Rocks was declared as a national nature preserve in 1973, when Slovakia was still part of Czechoslovakia.  It's located in the northwestern part of the country in the Súľov Mountains, which are part of the Inner Western Carpathian Mountain range.   Part of the Žilina Region, the preserve is a popular area for hiking, climbing, and biking.

Check out this drone video of one of the most well-known castle ruins in Slovakia, compliments of contributor NikolSpark.  It's called Pajštún Castle, and it's located just a short distance north of the capital city Bratislava in the western part of the country.  The semi-ruined structure dates to the 13th century, but was substantially rebuilt in the 1600's due to the threat posed by the Ottoman Turks at the time.  It was heaviy damaged by lightning in the 18th century and then blown up by French troops early in the 19th.

Here's a great aerial view of one of the most well-known castles of Slovakia, compliments of contributor martini.  It's called Trenčín Castle (Trenčiansky hrad), and it's in a town, district and region of the same name in the northwestern corner of the country.  Like many castles in Central Europe, it's a hilltop structure built on older Roman fortification.  Its rotunda likely dates to the 8th-9th century AD, and most of the rest of the site dates to the late Middle Ages.  The castle is open to touring and is home to a castle museum.

Top contributor and drone pilot Pavol Turcani brings us these marvelous wintertime aerial views of a ski area in southwestern Slovakia.  It's called Pezinska Baba, and it's located near the town of Pezinok, about 20 km (around 12 mi.) north of the Slovak capital city Bratislava.  The area lies in the Little Carpathian Mountains, a subchain of the larger Carpathian Mountains system that runs for about 100 km (around 60 mi.) and whose highest peak is just over 750 meters above sea level (around 2.5k ft.).

Like much of Central Europe, vast areas of Slovakia become a sea of beautiful Fall colors during the Autumn months.  The Carpathian Mountains and their various subranges and foothills (which go under various names), which cover much of the, are relatively low altitude peaks.  Their tree coverage is heavily of the deciduous (leaf-bearing) variety, unlike the pine-covered areas of the higher reaches of the Alps to the west.  In this drone video by etrax, you'll get a bird's eye view of this gorgeous fall landscape.

AirVuz contributor snail.fpv used a combination of drones to create this excellent piece of a dead-quiet Levice, Slovakia during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Spring of 2020.  The mid-sized city is situated in the southwestern part of the country, on the banks of the Hron River.  While Slovakia's rate of novel coronavirus infection was considerably less than its neighbors through March, its government imposed increasingly stringent social distancing measures, including a nationwide "shelter in place" that went into effect on April 8.

See what remains of Šášov Castle and its mountainous surroundings in this incredible aerial video by pilot Pavol Turčani.  The castle sits on the Hron river in the Banská Bystrica Region in the south-central part of the country. According to legend, the lord to the nearby Zvolen Castle built it for his court joker who had saved his life while out hunting. The castle was built to guard a trade road, then became a royal property in the 14th century, meeting its demise during the Rebellion of Estates in 1708.

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand-new contributor mattnovo brings us this excellent drone view of Slovakia's Červený Kameň Castle.  It's located in the southwestern part of the country in the Little Carpathians, not far from the capital city of Bratislava.  The site was originally used as a defensive position beginning in the 13th century to protect the Kingdom of Hungary's southern boundaries from continued Mongol assaults.  In the late 16th century, it was converted into an estate of one of the noble families of the region.

Slovakia's Apponyi Fortress is situated near the village of Oponice in the country's Nitra region, which covers the southwestern part of the country.  It occupies a strategically important position just west of the Tribeč Mountains, which are part of the Inner Western Carpathians.  Seen here in this drone video by AirVuz contributor and pilot Pavol Turčani, the fortress took its final medieval form in the 13th century, although it underwent significant alterations thereafter.  It's been in a ruined state since the early 1700s.

Slovakia's Ľupča Castle is an important landmark in its Banská Bystrica Region, which covers the south-central part of the country.  Seen in this drone video by bopat travel, the castle is built overlooking the town of Slovenská Ľupča in the foothills of the Tatra Mountains.  The structure was built in the 13th century in the wake of devastating Tartar invasions which terrorized much of Central Europe.  At one point, it served as an alternative residence for the Kings of Hungary, who ruled over much of modern-day Slovakia for centuries.

AirVuz contributor and pilot mário stašák brings us this magnificent drone video of a castle in the Central European country of Slovakia.  It's called Stará Ľubovňa, and it's located in the Carpathian Mountains in the northeastern corner of the country, not far from the border with Poland.  It's part of the Prešov Region, which covers most of northeastern Slovakia.  The castle dates to the 13th century, and possibly earlier.  The video was shot during the Fall season, when the Carpathians become a sea of colors.

Check out this fantastic drone video from Slovakia's Spiš region, compliments of AirVuz contributor mário stašák.  Located in the eastern part of the country, the region is situated between the High Tatras (part of the Western Carpathian Mountains) to the north and the Slovakia Ore Mountains (Slovenské rudohorie) to the south.  Most of the region was under the control of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries, although portions were under Polish control for a time before that kingdom was partitioned away in the late 18th century.

Liptovská Mara is an important reservoir lake in the Central European country of Slovakia.  Seen here in this drone video by new AirVuz contributor bopat travel, the lake is situated near the town of Liptovský Mikuláš in the Liptov Region, which covers a portion of north-central Slovakia.  The dam and reservoir were completed in 1975, following a decade-long construction period.  The primary purpose of the project is to control the flooding which periodically plagued the region, but it also provides some hydroelectricity generation.

After obtaining the requisite ATC permissions, contributor and first person view (FPV) pilot snail.fpv put together this marvelous FPV video from the Slovakian capital city of Bratislava.  Until recently, this city on the Danube River was not known for its skyscrapers, but (like many cities) it's undergone high rise building boom in the last two decades.  Watch the video for some great FPV dives of the city's tallest buildings as well as the Most SNP Bridge (sometimes called the UFO Bridge) and other spots in this Central European city.

Here's a nice 4k aerial view of one of the world's most famous Gothic castles, compliments of contributor and drone pilot etrax.  Spis Castle sits atop a hill in east-central Slovakia.  The current castle was built on the ruins of two older structures in the 15th century, with the site retaining elements of the prior constructions.  It was considered an important provincial outpost of the Kingdom of Hungary.  It was heavily damaged in a fire in 1780 and partially (and meticulously) reconstructed in the 20th century.

Prepare to be amazed by this stunning 4K video of one of Central Europe's most famous castles, compliments of delboi90.  It's called Bojnice Castle, and it's in the Trenčín Region of northwestern Slovakia.  The original structure is a 12th century Gothic style fortress, but the castle was extensively renovated around the turn of the 20th century to emulate the famous Renaissance style chateaus of the Loire River Valley in France.  Open to the public, it's one of the most popular destinations in Slovakia.

Červený Kameň is a castle in the western part of Slovakia.  Originally constructed in the Gothic style during the 13th century, it lies near the village of Častá in the Bratislava Region, which covers the westernmost portion of this Central European country.  The castle is in the foothills of the Little Carpathian Mountains, a subchain of the greater Carpathian range.  The original structure was built as part of the defensive system of the Kingdom of Hungary to protect itself from further Mongol invasions.

Check out this fantastic drone video of the Old Town of Bratislava, Slovakia by former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Zdronu.  Shot on a day when the city was covered by a light layer of snow, the video opens with a shot of the clocktower of the Old Town Hall, which dates to the 14th century.  Then it's on to Michael's Gate, one of the entrances to the Old City.  Next up is the red-roofed and crown-topped St Martin's Cathedral, near the old city's western end.  Other highlights include some great shots of the hilltop Bratislava Castle.

Orava: Breathtaking Castle of Slovakia


Orava Castle is a famous 13th century castle in northern Slovakia, near the border with Poland.  Originally a wood fortification built during the time of the Mongol invasions, it was reconstructed during the 19th century to assume its present Neo-Gothic design.  Contributor Castlehunter used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this epic aerial view of the castle, which was used to film a well known 1920's horor movie.  Orava appeared in the top 10 list of Slovakian castles in a recent ranking by Trip Advisor.

Košice is the second-largest city in the Central European nation of Slovakia, and the largest in its eastern region.  In terms of cultural importance, it is on a part with Bratislava, the country's capital, which lies at the opposite (western) end of of the country.  Kosice is situated on the Hornad River, which runs through into neighboring Hungary.  Contributor Drone Pilot SVK used a DJI Mavic Drone to aerially film this well preserved medieval city, which currently has a population of about 250,000.

New contributor bopat travel brings us this amazing drone video of Slovakia's Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.  The castle is built in the hills more or less on the border between the Prešov and Košice Regions, the two main regions of eastern Slovakia.  The original castle was built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century; it was extensively modified and then nearly rebuilt during the 15th century in a style that added late Gothic elements.  It's been in a semi-ruined state since the 18th century.
