Transylvania, Romania

alexgaflig...

The reputed home of Count Dracula, Transylvania is a large region covering much of northwestern Romania.  Unlike some of the country's other regions, Transylvania was not part of the country when modern Romania was created in the 19th century.  Rather, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, electing to join Romania after World War I.  Contributor Alexgaflig used a drone to create a marvelous portrait of this magical land, situated on a plateau surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains.

The core of the Romania's Transylvania region is the Transylvanian Plateau, which is more or less surrounded by various groupings or divisions of the Carpathian Mountains.  The mountains produce the other principal feature of Transylania, a series of rivers which ultimately drain into the Danube River (Europe's second longest waterway) and thence to the Black Sea.  Top contributor PaulVlad's created this excellent aerial video of this land, showing its connection to these great mountains and rivers.

Romania's Bran Castle is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the Romanian region of Transylvania.  Much of Bran Castle's fame is linked to one of the great characters of Western literature: Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's gothic 1897 novel, which is loosely based on the historical figure known as Vlad the Impaler.  While the association is likely erroneous, the castle has ever since been known as Dracula's Castle.  Check out the famous landmark from above in this drone video by Viajes Lost Planet.

Misty Mountains ( Apuseni - Romania )

Cristi Rus...

The Apuseni Mountains form the natural western boundary of the historical region of Transylvania, now part of Romania.  They are part of the Western Carpathian Mountain range.  Unliked the region's eastern and southern boundaries, which are defined by the Western and Eastern Carpathians, the Apuseni's are not a continuous range.  Seen here in this excellent drone video by AirVuz contributor Cristi Rus, the highest peak in the Apuseni's (Mt. Bihor) has a summit elevation of around 1.85k meters above sea level or just over 6k ft.

AirVuz contributor and pilot Ton18Drone brings us this fantastic drone video from the Carpathian Mountains in the Transylvania region of Romania.  The video was shot over and around Bâlea Lake in the Făgăraș Mountains, a subchain of the Southern Carpathians.  The lake lies in Sibiu County, just to the east of the Transfăgărășan roadway, which runs through the mountains and connects Transylvania with the region of Wallachia to its south.  Fed by glaciers, Bâlea sits at an altitude of just over 2k meters above sea level or around 6.7k ft.

Transfagarasan Romania - The best road in the world - In 4K

Daniel Gav...

When the Soviet Union invaded what was then Czechoslovakia in 1968 to crush an uprising, it caused other Warsaw Pact countries to worry they could face the same fate.  The most visible manifestation of this was in Romania, where the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu ordered the construction of a new road across the Făgăraș Mountains that divide the regions of Transylvania and Wallachia.  Thus was born the famous Transfăgărășan road, which you'll see here in this drone video by AirVuz contributor Daniel Gavrilas.

The Transfăgărășan is a mountain road crossing Southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania, connecting the Wallachia and Transylvania regions. The Transfăgărășan was constructed in the 70's on the orders of then-dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, who was worried about an invasion from his "ally" the Soviet Union.  The nearly 56-mile route that weaves through the mountains can be seen in this cinematic piece by pilot ridethefog, who captured the famous route in full 4K resolution with the DJI Mavic Pro.
