Aerial Tour of Transylvania

Transylvania, Romania

The reputed home of Count Dracula, Transylvania is a large region covering much of northwestern Romania.  Unlike some of the country's other regions, Transylvania was not part of the country when modern Romania was created in the 19th century.  Rather, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, electing to join Romania after World War I.  Contributor Alexgaflig used a drone to create a marvelous portrait of this magical land, situated on a plateau surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains.

Sighisoara: On the Transylvanian Plateau

Frame Hunt...

Top contributor and dront pilot Frame Hunters Media created this epic drone video of a well preserved town in Romania's Transylvania.  Sighisoara is a small city in the middle of the Great Transylvania Plateau, the flat elevated area which is mostly surrounded by various Carpathian Mountain ranges.  The town was settled in the 12th century by Germans invited by the then King of Hungary, which ruled the region at the time.  The extraordinarily well preserved city is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The core of the Romania's Transylvania region is the Transylvanian Plateau, which is more or less surrounded by various groupings or divisions of the Carpathian Mountains.  The mountains produce the other principal feature of Transylania, a series of rivers which ultimately drain into the Danube River (Europe's second longest waterway) and thence to the Black Sea.  Top contributor PaulVlad's created this excellent aerial video of this land, showing its connection to these great mountains and rivers.

Content creator and pilot Alin Constantin used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this stunning aerial video of the Rupea Citadel, a very well-known Romanian fort and the site of some of the oldest archaeological remains in Europe.  It's in the southeastern corner of Transylvania, near a pass in the Carpathian Mountains that define the eastern and southern boundaries of the Transylvanian Plateau.  While the fortress dates to Roman times, artifacts excavated at the site date to as long ago as 5500 BC.

Corvin Castle: Prison of Vlad the Impaler

Transylvania's Corvin Castle

Contributor and pilot duminciucbogdan used his quadcopter to create this spectacular aerial video of a famous Transylvanian castle.  Corvin Castle, sometimes known as Hunyadi Castle, was built in the 14th century.  It is considered one of the crown jewels of Romania, of which Transylvania became part in the early 20th century.  Corvin Castle is believed to have been a place where Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the character Count Dracula, was imprisoned for a time by a Hungarian noble.

Transylvania: Home of Dracula

Romania: In Search of Dracula

A couple's trip to Romania with a DJI Phantom 4 drone yielded this amazing video, much of which was shot in the Transylvania region which occupies much of the northern and western parts of the country.  Specific spots covered in and around Transylvania include Transfagarasan, the outskirts of Bran, Bran Castle, Rasnov, Sibiu, Rasnov Citadel, Peles Castle, and Balea Lake.  Watch it and you'll see why this corner of Southeastern Europe is becoming much more popular as a tourist destination.

Out of tragedy can come great beauty.  That's the lesson of Romania's Lacu Rosu (Red Lake).  It was created by a landslide caused by a large earthquake in 1838.  The lake is located in Harghita County, in the Transylvania region.  Actually, we don't know the extent of injuries or fatalities caused by the earthquake, due to the sparse population and poor recordkeeping at the time.  Check out this beautiful lake from a bird's eye perspective, compliments of contributor and drone pilot ChrisCross.

Romania's Bran Castle is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the Romanian region of Transylvania.  Much of Bran Castle's fame is linked to one of the great characters of Western literature: Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's gothic 1897 novel, which is loosely based on the historical figure known as Vlad the Impaler.  While the association is likely erroneous, the castle has ever since been known as Dracula's Castle.  Check out the famous landmark from above in this drone video by Viajes Lost Planet.

Romania's Apuseni Mountains are a strange lot.  Unlike other sections of the Carpathian Mountain chain which help to define the Transylvania region, the Apuseni's (sometimes called the Western Carpathians) aren't arranged as a imposing range which prohibits movement between regions.  Rather, they are peaks of lower altitude (the highest, Mt. Cucurbăta Mare, has an altitude of 1.8k meters or just over 6k ft.) with many low passes.  Check them out from an aerial perspective in this drone video by Andreea Cîra.

When the Soviet Union invaded what was then Czechoslovakia in 1968 to crush an uprising, it caused other Warsaw Pact countries to worry they could face the same fate.  The most visible manifestation of this was in Romania, where the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu ordered the construction of a new road across the Făgăraș Mountains that divide the regions of Transylvania and Wallachia.  Thus was born the famous Transfăgărășan road, which you'll see here in this drone video by AirVuz contributor Daniel Gavrilas.

The Transfăgărășan is a mountain road crossing Southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania, connecting the Wallachia and Transylvania regions. The Transfăgărășan was constructed in the 70's on the orders of then-dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, who was worried about an invasion from his "ally" the Soviet Union.  The nearly 56-mile route that weaves through the mountains can be seen in this cinematic piece by pilot ridethefog, who captured the famous route in full 4K resolution with the DJI Mavic Pro.
