Emilia-Romagna is an officially recognized region of north-central Italy. Its shape roughly resembles a triangle, with the base alongside the Adriatic Sea and pointed northwest. The capital of the region is Bologna, Italy's seventh-largest city and home of the world's oldest university. Roughly a quarter of the region lies in the Apennine Mountains, while most of the remainder is on a plain which runs down to the Adriatic. It features stunningly beautiful mountains and hilltop fortresses, beautiful seaside towns, iconic churches, and cities like Bologna and Ferrara, the latter being the home of most of the country's luxury car manufacturers. Here are the best drone videos of this region, which took the #1 spot on the Lonely Planet's 2018 rankings of the best European destinations. Please note that for collection purposes we are including the microstate of San Marino in the ER region. Aerial photo: “Monte Delle Formiche” by AirVuz contributor and drone pilot enricocif.

Top AirVuz contributor Luca T. brings us this excellent first person view (FPV) drone video of a famous hilltop castle in the foothills of Italy's Appenine Mountains. It's called Forte di San Leo, and it's located in the southeastern part of the Emilia Romagna region, not far from the border with the neighboring region of Marche. The current fortification was built in the 15th century atop the ruins of an earlier fort which dated to Roman times. Beginning in the mid-1600's, until the early 1900's, the fortress served as a prison.

Check out this fantastic drone video of the 19th century Italian estate called the Rocchetta Mattei, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Tommaso Biagi. Located in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains of the province of Bologna in north-central Italy, it was the home of Count Cesare Mattei, a well-known politician and self-taught doctor whose homeopathic treatments were sought by many famous personages of the time. The structure was built on the site of a fortress that dated to medieval times.

Check out this marvelous aerial tour of the "micro-state" of San Marino, compliments of AirVuz contributor Dani Massaro. One of the geographic oddities of Europe, San Marino is a tiny sovereign country which is completely surrounded by the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. With a permanent population of around 45k, the town is situated on the northeastern slopes of the Apennine Mountains, just west of the coastal city of Rimini. Along with Lesotho and Vatican City, it's one of the world's three enclaves - a country completely surrounded by another country.
