Sierra Nevada's: Donner Pass

Sierra Snow Fighters on Donner Pass

California's Donner Pass is one of the key passageways through the Sierra Nevada Mountains; it was the route for the famous Central Pacific railroad and later for the cross-country Interstate Highway 80.  It's one of the snowiest places in the USA, with an average of over 10 meters (over 400 inches) of snowfall every year. Without snow removal, much of Northern California would be "snowed in".  In this drone video from AerialKelly, you'll see the snowfighters of the Union Pacific as they battle to clear the rails after a big snow.

Lake Tahoe by Drone

Lake Tahoe Drone Footage

Brad Scott...

Contributor and pilot Brad Scott Visuals created this stunning aerial of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the border between California and Nevada.  With a surface area of just under 490 square km (around 190 square mi.), it's the largest Alpine lake in North America and the sixth largest by water volume, and it's #2 for maximum depth at 500m (1.6k ft.).  Famously, the lake was used to film a scene at the end of The Godfather: Part II (1974), and nearby Squaw Valley hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.

The Blythe Intaglios: California's Ancient Ruins?

Ancient Native American Intaglios in Blythe California

If you thought that ancient ruins would be perhaps the one phenomenon that couldn't be found in California, guess again.  Exhibit A is this fascinating drone video by contributor and pilot JordanB22 of the Blythe Intaglios, a series of ground inscriptions by pre-Columbian people.  Situated near the eponymously named town in the Colorado Desert east of Los Angeles, the figures are hard to discern other than from an aerial view.  Radiocarbon dating suggests they could date to as long ago as 1000 BC.

The Mojave Desert's Giant Rock

Giant Rock

There are big rocks and then there are BIG rocks.  This one is definitely the latter.  It's called Giant Rock, and there is no false advertising here.  Situated in California's Mojave Desert, it was believed to be the largest freestanding boulder in the world.  The past tense is due to the fact that a large chunk of it broke off in 2000, enough to dethrone its position as the World's Biggest Rock.  Contributor and drone pilot tglass0000 brings us this beautiful aerial view of Giant Rock, which stands seven stories tall.

Climbing Mt. Whitney

Mt. Whitney: Conquering a Granite Goliath

Christopher Abbey used a drone to record an epic trip to popular Mt. Whitney in California. Donner Pass

Donner Pass California

Donner Pass is one of the main passages through the USA's Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Seen here in this drone video by cward360, the pass was used by the first Transcontinental Railroad, Interstate 80, and in between by virtually every other railroad and highway to San Francisco.  It's named after an ill-fated group of 83 pioneers trying to reach California who were forced to spend the winter of 1846-47 here.  Famously, the 45 members of the Donner Party who survived that terrible winter did so by consuming the remains of those who did not.

Top AirVuz content creator and drone pilot Kasz Photo Creative was a 2017 Drone Video Awards Finalist in the aerial photography category. Specializing in aerial photography, she says this was her first attempt at creating a drone demo reel. We're pretty sure it won't be her last!  Featuring aerial views of the changing seasons, a cresting whale, beachside dronies, a wide variety of beach and ocean shots, winter scenes and more. Kasz's bevy of work, largely based out of California, is wide and impressive!

California is generally considered one of the USA's most photogenic states, so it's no surprise that AirVuz has thousands of drone videos uploaded from the Golden State.  In this video, the AirVuz editorial staff has compiled some of the best footage from three iconic California locations: (1) the Big Sur, an extremely pristine stretch of Pacific Ocean coastline south of Monterey Bay; (2) La Jolla, a beach community just north of San Diego; and (3) the Point Sur Lighthouse, at the southern end of Big Sur.
